Ghost didn’t regard the new painter much at all, at first.

He was hardly the first person who had come to gawk at him, setting up supplies a safe distance from the tank as he got ready to create yet another story to Roba’s liking. (1/11)

(cw: mermay, hunting for sport, kidnapping)

How do we feel about Ghost as a mer who’s pod had been killed by the trophy hunter, Manuel Roba.

Merfolk were something of legend, after all, (1/7)

familiar, agonizing jolt of his shock collar that sent him to the bottom of the tank. Paralyzed.

Soap’s eyes widened immediately, staggering backwards as they both watched Roba stroll into the room with a calculated grin and a remote in hand.

And the moment was lost. (11/11)

-he didn’t know. It was like the man was looking 𝘢𝘵 him, not through him, in a way no one had since he was first hauled into the tank.

And he was drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

But before he could consider doing something as dangerous as reciprocating the gesture, though, he felt the-(10/11)

-his hand brushing up against the tank. So Ghost stared back.

He wondered what the human truly thought of him. If he thought him weak for not being able to protect his pod. Or entertaining in the same way other mindless pets were.

Something foreign stirred in Ghost’s chest, though of 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵,-(9/11)

To not be talked down to like he had been for years.

Before he knew it, hours had passed. Soap was slowly packing up his supplies, promising not to make him wait too long until the next session.

They locked eyes, then. Soap lingered on the mer even after he finished speaking, (8/11)

Maybe he saw something in Ghost’s eyes— the last spark of sentience hidden under a wall of apathy. Maybe he felt pity.

It didnt matter.

Or maybe it did, because Ghost found himself listening as Soap rambled on, soothed by being involved in an actual— albeit one-sided— conversation. (7/11)

Just another assumption that had taken away his power.

No one talked to him, so he didn’t talk back.

But that didn’t stop the painter from introducing himself as Soap, anyway. Quietly explaining his background and walking him through what he planned to do. (6/11)

out to be this time.

So he was surprised when the man began talking to him. Relentlessly.

Ghost couldn’t remember the last time someone other than Roba had spoken to him. That anything other than taunts were thrown his way. These days, no one even knew he could understand their language. (5/11)

It never mattered what artist was brought in, they all painted the same story— one of a monster that Roba had brought to heal. Bound to a life of confinement and cursed to never be understood again.

He didn’t expect anything different from this human, only wondering what he would be made- (4/11)

The painting that hung closest to him emphasized his sullen features, how weak and malnourished he now looked in the confines of his tank. Always in direct view, all so he would never forget what Roba had done to him.

Ghost despised that one the most. (3/11)

Over the years, the villa had accumulated dozens of paintings of the mer. Some depicted Ghost as a vicious, roaring beast with bodies littered around him.

Others focused on Roba— his epic battles and ‘heroic’ deeds as he mercilessly slaughtered Ghost’s pod for the thrill of it. (2/11)

though, there was no way he was meant to be there, trapped behind glass instead of swimming freely across the ocean.

He may have entered Roba’s home as nothing more than an artist, but the moment that he locked eyes with the mer, one thing was certain.

He had to save him. (7/7)

But when he was hired to paint a ‘pet fish’ for one Mr. Roba, imagine his surprise to find a malnourished mer staring down at him instead. Soap had never seen such a beautiful creature before, let alone one that up close.

As much as he enjoyed the once in a lifetime chance, (6/7)

…Ghost expected to spend the rest of his miserable life in that tank.

Soap, on the other hand, was ex-military turned full-time painter. One who specialized in depicting marine life. (5/7)

Roba kept the mer in a tank in the center of his villa - one cylindrical in shape that barely allowed Ghost room to fully stretch out his limbs, regardless of how he positioned himself.

He was on display 24/7, nothing more than something to gawk at for those who passed by.(4/7)
