3/25 Traditional bread-making required hours of kneading and fermentation. CBP reduced the entire process – flour to sliced, packaged loaf – to about 3.5 hours.
How? A little bit of fat, Vitamin C (a fast-acting oxidising agent), and some high-speed mechanical mixing.

1 Nearly 800 generals and admirals ordered home from posts worldwide. No explanation given. At Quantico, they discovered why: America’s cities would now become military training grounds against ‘the enemy within’ – a phrase borrowed from Stephen Miller’s mentor David Horowitz.

The golden dome still gleams above Vienna, monument to both achievement and warning. Lueger’s techniques – economic nationalism, cultural grievance, mass mobilisation against elite success – never disappeared. They simply lie in wait for the next crisis to make them relevant again. /end

The lessons? Economic transformation creates both innovation and backlash. Jewish industrial capital made Viennese modernism possible. That same success – and immigration – generated the envy that authoritarian politicians could weaponise. Progress and reaction emerged from identical conditions.

Credit-Anstalt’s collapse in 1931 completes the circle. The Rothschild bank that had financed Austria’s post-1873 recovery finally crashed, taking the economy with it. 25% unemployment provided the conditions for Austrian fascism’s rise. The cycle that began with the 1873 crash ended with Anschluss.

A young aspiring artist arrived in Vienna in 1907, just as the system reached maturity. Adolf Hitler saw Lueger mobilising resentment against Jewish cultural and economic power. The techniques that had modernised Vienna – municipal services, public works – became a template for authoritarian rule.

The 1905 Secession split occurred precisely over commercialisation tensions. Could avant-garde art maintain integrity whilst being funded by industrial capital? The same contradiction plagued liberalism: new wealth enabled cultural innovation; inequality fuelled political hatred and scapegoating.

By 1900, Lueger’s model was working. The Christian Social Party controlled Vienna’s government. Municipal gas, water, electricity had been nationalised. Jewish businesses faced unofficial boycotts. The “Aryan Theatre” banned Jewish performers and playwrights whilst receiving city funding.

The resolution set a pattern: Jewish patron August Lederer “rescued” the rejected paintings for 30,000 crowns. Jewish collectors saving controversial modernist works from state censorship, inadvertently confirming antisemitic narratives about cultural subversion.

When Klimt’s university paintings – “Philosophy” and “Medicine” – showed humanity as helpless rather than triumphant, conservatives saw Jewish-financed cultural pessimism undermining Austrian confidence. University professors signed petitions. Parliament debated art for the first time ever.

Lueger’s cynical line – “I decide who is a Jew” – reflected this economic instrumentalism. He employed Jewish advisors because they were useful. But he attacked Jewish economic power because it was politically profitable.

The economic logic was bulletproof for his audience. Jewish families like the Bloch-Bauers commissioned golden portraits whilst Viennese artisans couldn’t afford rent. The Ephrussi “Grain Kings” built Ringstrasse palaces whilst small farmers lost their land to industrial agriculture.

Lueger’s mass politics innovations were revolutionary. He created the Christian Viennese Women’s League to mobilise disenfranchised women. Youth organisations marched with banners and uniforms. Public rallies blended religious pageantry and economic grievance. He invented populist political theatre.

1897: Klimt’s Secession manifesto (“To every age its art”) and Lueger’s mayoral confirmation – competing answers to Austria-Hungary’s economic transformation. Cultural modernism faced off against populist reaction, both responses to the crisis of liberal capitalism.

Lueger understood the cultural stakes perfectly. When conservatives attacked modernist art as having “Jewish taste,” they were really attacking the economic system that produced it – industrial capitalism displacing traditional Austrian authority structures. Art became the proxy battlefield.

This is where the Secession enters the story. By 1897, when Klimt founded the movement, Jewish industrial capital was seeking cultural legitimacy for its economic dominance. The Secession building, financed by Wittgenstein’s steel profits, became a monument to this new economic order.

When he municipalised Vienna’s gas supply in 1899, he was directly attacking Wittgenstein’s business interests. When he launched municipal savings banks, he challenged Rothschild’s financial dominance. Every policy had both a practical economic rationale and an antisemitic political message.

Lueger’s Christian Social Party economic programme was openly anti-capitalist: state takeover of gas works, tramways, electricity companies – all dominated by Jewish capital. Municipal socialism became antisemitic politics by another name. Lueger pioneered what we’d now call “economic nationalism.”

His “genius” was fusing economic nationalism with religious tradition. He depicted both capitalism AND socialism as “products of the Jewish mind.” Capitalist exploitation and revolutionary agitation became two sides of the same alien threat to Christian Austrian workers and small business owners.

In 1884, Lueger had sponsored the Democrats’ demand for “equality of all faiths.” By 1887, he was making violently antisemitic speeches supporting Georg von Schönerer’s Jewish exclusion bill. What transformed him was a growing appreciation of antisemitism’s electoral power.

His break came in the late 1880s when he discovered that raising the “Jewish Question” earned him enormous popularity. Lueger’s wasn’t ideological antisemitism – it was cynical economic populism. Every setback could be reduced to a simple formula: “The Jews are to blame.”

Lueger grasped the political opportunity perfectly. The economic forces creating Jewish industrial riches were biting the Viennese lower-middle class. Artisans, small shopkeepers, cab drivers, clerks – the backbone of Vienna’s German-speaking population – watched as their livelihoods disappeared.
