what's sad is that caine very clearly put months of thought and preparation into that escape the circus adventure, and did it mainly with the (admittedly self serving) intention of getting them to like him - he was completely taken aback by their reactions bc he just can't read the room

It’s just my interpretation, but I love the contrast. Kinger is naturally beloved like a parent, while Caine is shunned by them even though he genuinely loves everyone in his own way. That gap is so fascinating.
