I agree, i think our government has really interesting priorities with how they spend their money (where our tax dollars go). Im sure football is important to the economy but maybe look at the people within the province struggling to afford living costs first?

So unfortunate for many sports. I’m afraid even besides sports so many events will be ruined due to the climate change and people avoiding heat.

Wow, I noticed the increase of ticks but did not know climate change was causing it!! That is really disturbing I hope something is done to deal with this so people don’t avoid outdoor movement during the summer.

Very brave of him to do. Its unfortunate that he was treated differently afterwards, but at least it may have inspired others.

Very interesting, when i visited South Africa, I noticed they also have something similar and have a “sugar tax” on their sodas as well. It seems to be a good tool

this is a great example, i do think sports are a very effective way to get a big population of people to notice and support you.

The amount of media we are exposed to daily is pretty insane. I agree, many times we aren’t even realizing it and some media may even get into our heads creating negative emotions and thought without us even realizing

This is so true, it reminds me of the conversation in class today about uneven coverage. People love to use the excuse that women sports are just not popular but never think about the why- If we never see them perform in the first place how will they gain following and popularity?!!

While it is a good tool, it can also have negative effects as it exposes athletes to public scrutiny and even hate. Athletes also reported that social media affected their concentration and raised performance anxiety as they didn’t want to be critiqued. The constant comparison also heightens stress.

This states how social media gives athletes direct access to fans now. It allows them to build their own personal brand and have their own community, rather than being just represented by others. It gives more control over their image and allows for more deals.
How social media is changing the game for athletes
Should we begin to treat athletes as brands? And what are the consequences of doing so, both on and off the field?

Suarez had 3 incidents of biting his opponents during matches.Twice he was suspended and following his last incident he got banned and went to therapy for it.This is an example of Brutal Body Contact as biting isn’t acts of “normalized violence” on the field. www.businessinsider.com/world-cup-20...

Nick is especially inspiring considering the news he was told before achieving everything. This is a great example of everyone being able to participate with appropriate accommodations.

I like this a lot! It shows how quick society is to judge people by their physical appearance when their abilities go far beyond that. Quite impressive seeing all the accomplishments he had despite the judgement.

I agree it’s very disappointing. This case specifically was in 1996 and thankfully we’ve seen lots of improvements since then but there’s still a long way to go.

As Dawes was a black woman with a muscular and athletic physique she was treated as if she showed “negative deviance” because she didn’t fit the norm. (seen as breaking it)

Dominique Dawes a Black gymnast in the 1996 olympics was seen as different from the start. Gymnastics “wasn’t for black girls like her” and her body was considered deviant or exotic even before she began her routine. (Week 8)

Quinn stated that the emotional strain was even harder than the physical toll. She “tied so much of her self-worth to her playing that when she could no longer perform, she lost herself. “ This shows the alienation of her body, willing to sacrifice for a goal, and being a machine before a person.

After lots of backlash, she stated “My core values are making sure that women know how strong they are. And if I don't show that, then who am I to try and have values like that?” She has really challenged “female norms” and the misconception that once you become a mother your life/ career is over.
