And, as you point out, the real life history that the Mad Men scene dramatizes is a case where people were *under*reacting to something harmful, because they were poorly informed, and kids died. This guy holding it up as some aspirational example of past stoicism is just baffling.

If you're making a case about "Then vs. Now," drawing from fictional depictions of the past is pretty silly. Like I generally wouldn't cite a scene in a western movie to make a point about "times back then," even if I thought it were fairly accurate. I'd try to find actual accounts of the event.

"In the Trojan War, Achilles was nigh impervious to all the weapons of the enemy - until the divine intervention and the treacherous use of poison by Prince Paris finally laid him low. This morning my weak toddler stubbed his toe and cried."

Sharp swerve aside… the first example is fiction??

Have all the leg lengthenings you want. I just think it's weird to never tell tell your wife about it.

I mean, real talk, if leg enshortening were on the table and not 1) stupidly expensive 2) likely very painful and/or dangerous… I'd maaaaaybe consider dropping a couple inches.

(I think people should be able to end their lives if they want to, w support & w/o stigma. But I also think people should have pain medication, good healthcare, mental health therapy, and guaranteed housing, w support & w/o stigma…it is a lack of these which cause depression and suicidal ideation…

Screening people for autism *without* ADHD by finding out who actually played Mousetrap as-written.

Again, it depends… a lot of times I appreciate a completely ridiculous thing done in complete sincerity a lot more than something that is too in on the joke (see: genuine cult films vs "bad-on-purpose" kinda stuff). But like it's really case by case. I haven't played the game, so 🤷‍♀️

I dunno, as a 40K-liker, I can easily be sold on very silly and/or stupid things.

Cyberpunk dystopia where you still technically have to consent to let companies sell your data but everyone has brain chips pre-installed that give them a erotic sense of exhibitionism when they do.

I forgot about the Jefferson Davis connection, so I retract the adoption.

Tangentially related, but this reminds me of one of my favorite bits of American folklore and I think some faction of the Gen-Z left should adopt it (it already sounds communist-y)

Agreed and I expect no better from Musk et all. I dunno if it rises to anything legally significant, but the design is absolutely a knockoff of a character from a popular manga/anime, basically.
