Leveraging strategic comms for positive change. Advocate for safe streets and sustainability / believer in the power of collective action, among other things.
Advocates asked Cuomo to sign the pledge to Make McGuinness Safe before the primary, which is more than enough time to "review the plan." These are not the words of a candidate that is serious about street safety.

Because @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social ran a people-powered campaign/is not beholden to special interests, he can truly advance policy and infra solutions that make streets safe and improve transit — this is a generational opportunity to transform our urban landscape

The $5M a year needed to support Open Streets, play streets, free on-street programs, bike boulevards and generally high quality public spaces is peanuts in the scope of the City budget — yet Mayor Adams is refusing to provide this funding. Shame on you! nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/04/03/o...

@tabk.bsky.social wrote to DCP Chair Garodnick about our recommended streetscapes improvements for the Atlantic Avenue re-zoning. These will also be submitted as written testimony for this hearing:

Actually, across the board, hydrant zones supposedly lead to significant decreases in right angle crashes. But this isn’t mentioned in the report at all. Why not?
January 28, 2025 at 8:14 PM
Similarly, hydrant zones have no significant impact on motor vehicle injuries at 1-way intersections — except in the BX, where they lead to more injuries. But then in BK they lead to fewer right angle crashes?
January 28, 2025 at 8:13 PM
For example, per the report, at 1-way intersections “hydrant zones”, a supposed proxy for daylighting, have no statistically significant impact on pedestrian safety — except in Queens, where they supposedly lead to more injuries.

Despite the increase in ped fatalities this past year, the Adams admin has been pushing back against safety treatments, recently releasing a report to try to undermine advocacy to make universal daylighting the law in NYC.

Pedestrians and cyclists are tossed into super wide intersections that permit dangerous left and right turns with no LPI:

Visibility is obstructed at almost every crossing:

Yesterday @tabk.bsky.social did a rush hour walkthrough of Atlantic Ave to think about what safety improvements to recommend as part of the Atlantic Ave rezoning. The conditions for pedestrians are appalling, and the corridor desperately needs attention.

The sidewalks are virtually un-walkable:

Universal daylighting in NYC is long overdue. Forty three states have some version of it (including NYS), and the policy will greatly help city agencies like DOT speed implementation of safety projects.

As of today, universal daylighting legislation in the city council has 16 sponsors:

Notably, in press pickup on safety stats for 2024 @nyc-dot.bsky.social highlighted a 4% decrease in traffic fatalities, not mentioning the 22% increase in fatalities for pedestrians.

These stats illustrate exactly why NYC needs universal daylighting.

New Jersey government is failing its residents. This is a pivotal moment in which our elected leaders should champion transit — instead, Phil Murphy is rejecting a massive investment in his state's transit system for seemingly no reason.

I'm thrilled to see @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social co-sponsor A9985A to make universal daylighting the law in NYC!

New York needs a mayor that supports policies like daylighting — a commonsense, low-cost, scalable interventions that will save lives, prevent injuries and make the city healthier.

This week, 2 more community boards passed resolutions asking for universal daylighting in NYC. The total number of boards supporting daylighting is now 21 — far more than backed COY, for context. @nyc-dot.bsky.social and @council.nyc.gov need to listen and commit to daylighting the entire city!

A week after the new trash rules have gone into effect, the buildings on my block - all fewer than 9 units - have complied zero times. My super tells me rats routinely chew through trash bins, and he doesn’t think the new bins or rules will help.

Great piece by @sophlebo.bsky.social that captures one of key issues with the current Open Street program in NYC — it relies too heavily on volunteer labor. The city reaps the economic benefits of Open Streets and should invest accordingly to support the program.

Daylighting is something NYers are asking for too — with over 19 community boards representing nearly 3M people now having passed resolutions supporting universal daylighting. @nycmayor.bsky.social and @nycdot.bsky.social should join Paris and CA and make NYC a world leader on this issue.
