It was a pleasure to give a seminar at the Universidad Privada Boliviana in Cochabamba last Friday about our research (w/ @duncanmcdonnell.com) on the transnationalisation of the populist right.

Thanks to Oscar Gracia Landaeta, Andrés Laguna-Tapia & Claudia Muriel for being excellent hosts 💕

All good things come to an end 🥲

The last seminar of our South American trip (w/ @duncanmcdonnell.com) will take place at Universidad Privada Boliviana in Cochabamba, this Friday.

Looking forward to further exchanges about the transnationalisation of the PRR with UPB students and colleagues!

I really enjoyed presenting our research (w/ @duncanmcdonnell.com) on the rise of the transnational populist right at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires.

Great audience and really thoughtful questions throughout - exactly the kind of exchange that makes giving seminars so rewarding!

It was great to present our research (w/ @duncanmcdonnell.com ) on the transnationalisation of the PRR at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.

It was also a pleasure to chat with their very talented graduate students afterwards, and to stroll around the beautiful campus.

One of the best parts of this job: travelling to places I might never otherwise visit, to talk to people for my research.

Very excited to have conducted interviews inside the National Congress in Brasilia today 🇧🇷

It’s acknowledgements time, as I prepare to re-submit my revised manuscript to Oxford University Press. To mark this important milestone, I’m pairing the task with a delicious Riesling from South Australia.

As per tradition, we’re celebrating with a #polsci cocktail.

Inspired by my talk of 🍋🍋, here is the Lemon Burlee (from The Parlour, Brisbane):

For 2:
3oz Limoncello
2oz Vanilla Vodka
2oz lemon juice
1oz sugar syrup
Egg whites

Dry shake, then shake w/ ice. Garnish with a slice of dry lemon.

Using causal mediation analysis, I find that this is because women are more embedded in party networks than men.

They are more likely to have been recruited by the party when joining, and to have made new friends in the party since joining.

Drawing on original survey data from thousands of members of the League 🇮🇹 and the Sweden Democrats 🇸🇪, I uncover a very surprising finding...

Women PRR party members are *more* active than men in a series of low- and medium-intensity activities, and are *as* active as men in high-intensity ones.
June 17, 2025 at 10:03 PM
Based on the literature on gender and party politics, I hypothesise that women will be *less* active members than men because they:

- have less motivations to participate (i.e. efficacy & ambition);

- are less embedded in party networks;

- are more sensitive to the stigma surrounding PRR support.

Thrilled that my article on women's activism in PRR parties has been published open access today in @cpsjournal.bsky.social 💫

journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

This is my favourite article from my PhD thesis. I love the topic, its findings, and the literature it draws on.

Thrilled that my article on women's activism in PRR parties has been conditionally accepted in @cpsjournal.bsky.social!

Drawing on membership surveys of the League 🇮🇹 and the Sweden Democrats 🇸🇪, I show that women members are *more active* than men because they are more embedded in party networks.
