And it wasn’t about the environment or anything — it was revenge. The Marsh Arabs had rebelled against him, so he went after their home. By doing that, he wiped out a culture that had lived in sync with water, reeds, and mud for over five thousand years.

He rerouted the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and almost all of the wetlands — like 95% — just vanished. What used to be this massive green paradise turned into cracked, dry desert land.
