Over the last 5 years I’ve experienced this first at the level of my family of origin and, later, as lay leader of our church. Not about politics, but about having eyes to see plain truth and the harm being done by their ignoring it. I tried so hard to explain, marshal the evidence… didn’t matter.

Actually, I think her Arabness is also driving people insane. Her look reminds me so much of fashionable, arty Lebanese women I’ve seen in Beirut and Paris. (My experience is limited to Levantine culture but point still stands.)

Give it ten years and you'll see the same trajectory of abuses of power, etc. as in the evangelical church. That's what happened with the "true believer" Anglicans who split off from the Episcopal Church in the early aughts. (See recent WaPo investigations for more.)
