@rolfzwaan.bsky.social is organizing a multilab replication of Loftus & Palmer's (1974) classic study: People's memory of two cars' speed was influenced by the verb used in Q ("How fast were the cars moving when they ____"). This is exciting, & if you want to take part in it, check out Rolf's post.

These are informal analyses, so their replicability remains to be seen. But I thought I'd tell you about them in case you find them intriguing. If a construct (body size, personality, intelligence) is multidimensional, the "jaggedness" of individual profiles may be greater than we assume.

This analysis was inspired by Daniels' 1952 report involving 4,063 Air Force pilots. He examined how many of these pilots were "average" (approx. middle 30%) in ALL 10 body measurements. Answer: ZERO! We wanted to see if this also happens w/ psychological measures. The answer seems to be yes.

September 6 is, er, was Fight Procrastination Day. I meant to post this yesterday, but I forgot, I had other things to do... Better late than never, right?
In any case, I hope you didn't put off any important task yesterday!

Imagine you have Big 5 personality scores from over 300,000 people. You designate the scores in the "mean +/- 0.25 SDs" range for each trait (~20%) as the average range.
QUESTION: How many people in this >300K sample do you think fall in the average range for ALL 5 TRAITS?
What's your answer?

Happy #Caturday!
Walking on this narrow wooden fence is something Tiger always does when I occasionally let her (and my other cat, Hunter) spend a bit of time at the backyard (they're under my close supervision, though). Look at her tail! She's having a good time.

A joy of morning walks (besides enjoying podcasts & audiobooks) is to discover something new. That something new the other day was a cute fox with a bushy tail. I've never seen a fox before in Boulder & didn't expect to see one just a few minutes from my house. Walking earlier than usual paid off.

I'm teaching a grad seminar on idiographic cognitive science this fall in which we cover:
1️⃣ Perils of relying on averages
2️⃣ ESM/EMA studies of within-individual variations
3️⃣ Modeling individual data
4️⃣ Person-specific interventions
If you know of any great EMPIRICAL studies, pls let me know. (1/2)

August 8 is International Cat Day, "a day to raise awareness for cats and learn about ways to help and protect them" (Wikipedia). Adopting Tiger & Hunter in 2021 was one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you have cats, do something extra special today for them.

Virtually all procrastination research focuses on delays associated wi/ aversive/unpleasant tasks, so I find this new study by Hagen & O'Brien (tinyurl.com/4tn26hkv) intriguing. I tend to think, though, that the reasons for such delays may be more complex & even idiosyncratic. More research needed!

As someone interested in exploring idiographic (person-specific) approaches to cognition (I'll be teaching a grad seminar on this topic this fall!), I particularly resonated to the Modersitzki et al. article tinyurl.com/7pf3buab👇. Check it out if you're curious about idiographic approaches. 2/2

This article discusses how these 5 factors contribute to both INTER- & INTRA-individual variation in MM & provides a good theoretical basis for future intervention efforts. It also points out a need for studying 3 understudied factors in future research. Highly recommended! 2/2

This new AESP chapter piqued my interest. As someone studying procrastination, I can see why effort is avoided (e.g., part of task aversion) & is also valued (e.g., deep satisfaction, work ethic). I look forward to taking a deep dive & gaining new insights into the role of effort in procrastination.

Well, here's the blurb I wrote for this course. I'd like this class to be practical (not too methodological) & illustrate the benefits of idiographic approaches w/ concrete examples & interactions w/ guest speakers (e.g., Q&As on an assigned article). Perhaps you (& Jason) might be willing to help?

When I was packing before my trip to Europe, I thought Hunter was trying to convince me to stay.
When I came home & tried to unpack my suitcase, here's what happened. Perhaps Hunter just likes my suitcase as a bed?😢

I'd personally like "indict" to be spelled as it is pronounced, but "indite" already seems to be taken (I looked up the Merriam-Webster!). It's good to know, though, that all these words share the Latin stem "dicere." Is it too late to start pronouncing "indict" as it is spelled (like predict)?

I live in Colorado, but I’ve been a longtime Mariners fan because of this guy. Before, I had no interest whatsoever in baseball, but his arrival in 2001 changed everything. I’m so happy that Ichiro will be officially inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame tomorrow as the 1st Asian/Japanese player!

As somebody who studies self-control (but is bad at it), I read this 2025 open-access review on the self-control of eating (tinyurl.com/bdnebw79) by Mann & Ward w/ great personal interest. I highly recommend it, esp. if you study self-control and/or want to deal w/ your eating regulation challenges.

At the procrastination conference in Utrecht last week, I finally met Caitlin Mahy in person. @yukomunakata.bsky.social introduced us, & we ended up co-authoring a review paper (rdcu.be/dPMCV).
A fun fact: Caitlin took my CogPsych class at the Univ. of Toronto in 2005. I was there for only a year!

I'm now on my way to the Denver airport to catch a flight to the Netherlands. It was hard to pack my suitcase & then say goodbye to my two cats. Yes, separation anxiety is real, & I’m the one feeling it! (My cats are in good hands while I'm away, so they should be fine.)
