This gene was first discovered in Drosophila and called Hedghog (HH). Because in Drosophila the mutated phenotype gives the name to the gene. For ex, the gene coding the orange color of the eye is called White.
When HH is mutated, the embryo looks like a hedghog… Sonic was added to the vertebrates.
