I want to publicly express my support for the 4 former members of Guelph's Accessibility Advisory Committee, who have resigned in protest. I've sent this letter to city Council to express my outrage at the way these VOLUNTEERS have been marginalized and silenced. #Guelph
Hello, I just finished watching the April 15 meeting of the Accessibility Advisory Committee, and am writing in support of the members who resigned in protest. The disabled community in Guelph has been treated shamefully by this Council and by staff. The actions of the Mayor, Council, and staff re: the AAC and the public space bylaw are disgraceful, and broadcasts your contempt for the disabled community & contempt for the role the AAC is supposed to play in your decision-making processes. Cutting them out of the consultation process, claiming the committee had been consulted when they had not, refusing to give them time on their own meeting agendas, providing pre-written motions you expect0 them to pass - it is quite evident that decision-making process at the City of Guelph does not value or respect the disabled community, and the AAC is only an inconvenient obstacle to be maneuvered around. Shame on all of you for taking the benefits of their volunteer labour and expertise while deliberately silencing them. All four members were right to resign in protest and have my full support. Treating their time and work as disposable, using them so you can say "See, we have a committee, we value their input" while simultaneously marginalizing the disabled community, is ableist and wrong. What is the council and the City of Guelph planning to do to make this right? Regards.
