I'm sorry, 60+ teacher ed prof here and I find it utterly depressing that all are suggesting series and not award-winning literary works of art that continue to wow and amaze the experts in children's lit. Check out the NYPL/NYT lists, and don't forget picture books! Has he read any by Polacco?
