Husband, father, brother. Started Idealist.org. Freedom and dignity for all.
On a very different note, this week my wife and I went to the Whitney to see an exhibition of Amy Sherald’s paintings. It’s literally breathtaking. If you are in New York, don’t miss it.

A sign at a protest in Tel Aviv tonight. Yes, they do. (And before someone jumps on me, yes, of course Jewish lives matter too. The people holding the sign are Jewish. And they believe Palestinian lives matter. Walk and chew gum. It’s possible.)

In this moment we are in, humanizing one another is more important than ever. A few weeks ago, a friend who works with children in Gaza sent me this photo from a workshop there. This could be my daughter, or yours.

This is the entrance to the bathrooms at the new train station in New York. The line on the left is for the women’s bathroom. The empty one on the right is for the men (with no one waiting). You’d think that by 2025 planners would know that women need more stalls?

Long story, but it’s not every day that I get to host Lonnie Ali, Muhammad’s wife, in our office. She laughed when I said that “idealist” contains ideALIst.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah from Brooklyn. (The mailbox says “North Pole” but I think that mail was already delivered.) ❤️

Let me use this joyous lighting of a Christmas tree in Damascus to wish a happy holiday to everyone celebrating this week, wherever you are. May it bring us a peaceful year, or at least a less horrifying one.

From 2017 but relevant every year:

“I don’t see any reason to be optimistic. What will the new year bring?”

“I think it will bring flowers.”

“Really? Why?”

“Because I’m planting flowers.”

(By the Spanish cartoonist José María Nieto.)

Very moving stories from Syria today, where rebels broke into the Central Prison in the city of Hama and released hundreds of political prisoners. This man, Ali Hassan Al-Ali, was kidnapped from Lebanon 40 years ago when he was 17. Today he is free.

Tel Aviv, Saturday night. “Stop the war.” Yes. Amplify these voices.

Someone just sent me this photo of herself from yesterday, and it is perfect ❤️

Let’s try something different. Do you have a photo of you as a child that you’d like to share as a reply here? This is me with my sister somewhere in Peru a long time ago. You? Thank you!

Reading news from all over the world, I keep repeating the same mantra to myself: Freedom and dignity for all. Not just for my people or for yours. For all.
