How did the broken plural form of “mälək/መልክ”, a Geʽez/#Gəʿəz/#ግዕዝ term that originally meant “king”, become the singular form of the word for deity, “aməlak/#አምላክ”? Could it have been because newly-evangelised #Aksum|ite Christians struggled to break an old habit?

EMML 899 is one of several books purchased by Zawditu, Empress of Ethiopia, and given by her to Qeddus Yosēf Church in Addis Ababa: vhmml.org/readingRoom/view/202730

The Gospel book opens with a photograph of Crown Prince Tafari Makonnen, who would go on to become Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē.
