The implications of Chara being suicidal, having climbed Mt Ebott for an "unhappy reason" and having poisoned themself so Asriel could absorb their soul is made even more sad by how they evidently brought a lot of hope to the lives of those in the underground.

In neutral, the monsters describe Chara as having brought hope to the underground, and Asgore, under certain conditions, describes Chara as hopeful. Chara's nihilism at the end of the genocide route and how they view power as their only purpose hits hard after that.
