Literally left my PhD program in neuro because I realized I wanted to do a stats job, and the department would only/could only teach me SPSS. I taught myself R on the side, but I still am learning more everyday to catch up with my theoretical knowledge.

I have heard the same about Italy. Still tempts me, because it's actually scary here in the US now.
