It could also be an obstruction in the road. The point is, in the middle of the lane you may have the option of swerving left or right as needed. No such option if you’re hugging the curb.

I generally feel safer taking up the lane for the reason you mentioned, as well as visibility, having an escape route if needed and staying out of the crap in the gutter. Generally haven’t had a problem with cars, but that can depend on the local culture.

Yep. Certainly the car is completely to blame here. Everyone has their own comfort level, but generally I feel safer controlling the lane (cars don’t always appreciate it). If I don’t feel safe doing it, I’ll get off the road ASAP.

Always afraid about drivers pulling crap like this - looks like they’re trying to squeeze past you in the same lane. I try to ride in the middle of the lane forcing the driver to change lanes just like they’d do when behind a slower car.
