History PhDer, Wolfson Scholar & tired but joyful toddler mum. Researching formation of imperial identities across diverse spaces and 'contact zones' in the long 18th century and pondering ideas of time, transformation and imagining. Just happy to be here!
Thrilled to introduce my manager. You would be forgiven for thinking I answer to my supervisors, but in actual fact my tiny manager calls all the shots and - as my supervisors will confirm - he is one tough task master! (Ft. my current wfh situation - a spare bed full of crap and a suitcase desk 🫣)

No matter how hard people try to convince us having empathy is wrong,

it is right.

No matter how hard people try to convince us that diversity is a weakness,

it is a strength.

No matter how hard people try to convince us that love is limited,

it is unlimited.

Sent my thesis introduction to my supervisors yesterday and have already compiled a list the length of my arm of things that are wrong with it having spent the night mulling it over… that said, I take heart from the fact I now have a FULL thesis draft which feels like a huge and exciting milestone!

As some of you were aware, the name of the IHR Tudor and Stuart seminar was recently attached to a day conference that included David Starkey in its line-up. That will no longer be the case going forward.

Won’t eat any of the plethora of food items I packed for him, or the flapjack I panic bought for him at the cafe, but will eat the (entire) cheese & pickle panini I bought for myself for lunch! Clearly a man of good taste as he loves Branston pickle like me and his Auntie @lauradearden.bsky.social 😂

I've been so productive this morning (she says... on social media) and I was like hmm why is that. Then I remembered I woke up at 5:30, dropped my child off a bit early at nursery, and have had three coffees (cough, iced lattes).

Most days I am confronted with images from Palestine which leave me unable to breathe & I have nightmares most nights. How are others coping? I.e. finding the balance between not looking away & doing what you can, whilst remembering you have children to care for, a job to do, and a life to live?

I was just looking at a short-term fellowship in the US but can't apply as it requires fellows to stay in specific accommodation which doesn't allow partners or children. What is the rationale behind fellowships that have a residency requirement of this type attached to them? Genuine question! (1/x)
