some of you may remember elmer. elmer is now a very friendly silly hen whose favorite activity is standing on the tire of her mobile chicken coop
elmer the polish hen has an enormous but very tidy bouffant of white feathers that almost totally obscure her eyes, a pointy little orange beak, and light grey-blue feathers on her body. she is staring quizzically at zara's hand as though she's never seen a hand before elmer the polish hen is standing on the wheel of her mobile chicken coop (dubbed by farm denizens 'the food truck'), staring through the mesh at the other chickens within elmer the polish hen in profile elmer the polish hen pecking hopefully at the bare grass by zara's knee

here are some chickens. happy thanksgiving
this chicken is a polish rooster named tweedle-dee. he has fancy white tail plumes, body feathers ranging cream-gold-brown, and a jaunty little mohawk. this chicken is a polish rooster currently named roadrunner. when he was an unsexed chick he was one of a trio of matching chicks we called "the church ladies", so his name used to be sylvia. he is a mix of black and red-brown, with an absolutely deranged crown of feathers sticking up in every direction. this chicken is a polish hen named tweedle-dum. she is thus named because when she was a chick and still living in the barn, she got herself stuck, not once but twice, between the wooden wall of the stall and the tin siding of the barn. on both occasions it took four people and multiple implements to extract her. she was not helpful and she did not learn a single lesson from either experience. anyway she is a very cute little hen with cream and gold feathers and a tidy mohawk. she has never been given custody of her flock's communal ⅓ of a brain cell.

ernie is TWELVE today y'all
ernest, a black standard poodle in his scruffy muppet phase, stares dolefully (we assume) at the camera. his fluffy fringe obscures his eyes. as he is a gentleman of a certain age, his snoot has faded to a distinguished grey-brown. he is sitting outdoors but is likely thinking wistfully of his luxury dog bed in my mother's home office.
