Sinclair was a lifelong social justice activist and advocate for the working poor. His novels expose corporate and political corruption, challenge the systems that keep workers in grinding poverty, and advocate social protest. He continued writing until his death in 1968 at the age of 90. /end

Sinclair’s political success came through his writing. The Jungle led to significant food safety reforms and, in 1967, LBJ invited him to the White House for the signing of the Wholesome Meat Act, a direct result of the reforms sparked by his earlier work. /7
