Well, snow day today. Made it to the mountain but the ski company had already started making snow across the road. Ugh, now folks have to go back for a very long and steep hike to finish our work that we are almost two months behind in completing due to the shutdown. At least the view was pretty.

I went all out and challenged myself to a hard hike to finish out this very long furlough. I was certainly rewarded. I am looking forward to getting back to our research tomorrow.

I am trying to use my furlough time in productive ways. I signed up for a free online class to learn how to edit milky way photos. I used the tricks I've learned so far to edit an old picture I took in Idaho while working on my PhD.

As I wait to find out if I will be rif’d along so many other feeds in DOI, I’ve been trying to see and do things in the area that I might not do again here in Southern California. I had a great day yesterday supporting women’s soccer.

I had this trip planned weeks ago, but it was needed now more than ever (Day 14 of furlough). The Eastern Sierra's were beautiful. I can't wait to check them out again in the spring. It started to snow on my final day so I had to keep my hike short but it was fun to see the change in weather.

Happy national taco day! Glad it fell on a Tuesday this year so all of us furloughed folks might be able to afford some.

Had a lovely, relaxing, Saturday evening at Seal Beach watching the sunset. Sometimes it's really nice to just get away from things and just enjoy the natural world (even while living in a city).

It’s getting hot here in Southern California so I have to work out later. At least I still can see some cool skies.

Happy world turtle day! Here’s a photo of a western pond turtle we just released after it was checked for a unique identification tag as a part of a long-term research study aimed at conserving this species in Southern California.

I’m up late tonight baking for my lab because everyone is in need of a pick me up. It’s totally worth the lack of sleep because I discovered the best baking hack I’ve learned about in a while: goop is far better than any non-stick spray I have ever used. My bundt cake came out of the pan so easily.
The best pan release ever is homemade
Once you make cake goop, you'll never use anything else. Super easy to make, inexpensive and works every time for getting your cakes to release from the pan. Never buy pan release again!

Unfortunately, I knew I could not handle the crowds at the rallies today. But that did not stop me from contributing to science. I went out and collected some citizen science data on some of the blooming vegetation in SoCal now that we have had a little rain.

I grew up apple picking every fall. In college I discovered 'honeycrisp' but recently, I realized I no longer enjoy them. I assumed my tastes had changed but maybe they just are not that good where I was buying them (I used to get them from local orchards) www.seriouseats.com/how-honeycri...
How Honeycrisp Apples Went From Marvel to Mediocre

Thank you to the Boston Globe for this story about a class representative in the MSPB class action for employees of the Department of Interior
NEW: The lead plaintiff appealing mass federal firings is a New Hampshire-based wildlife biologist named Allison.

She’s representing thousands in a class action for #DOI employees.
