I think "small" might require some experimenting for what works for you. I would try for something that feels manageable and stretches you in a good way. Is that 5 minutes/day? 400 words/week? A blog post/week? I prefer time or word count as markers. It's finite but you can always do more or adjust.

I have to constantly remind myself that writing is a habit I must build and maintain. I can't just start up again and be where I was before I stopped. So, I'd probably start small and with the knowledge that it might be tough rebuilding the habit, no matter how much you *want* to write.

In one case of really terrible pain, I actually had a disc that slipped out of place. My chiropractor fixed that.

Had a summer of bad lower back pain and it was a combo of stress, bad mattress, tight muscles, and lack of good supportive shoes (indoor and out). Chiropractic adjustment, stretching, new mattress and good shoes all help. It was never one thing and bad habits accumulated over time.
