The Snatcher by Amanda N. Newman (book 1 of the Grimoire Archive: Bounty Hunter series). Skabor (the male MC, a white young man with shoulder length dark brown hair with a blood-red streak in it, wearing a leather coat, fingerless gloves, jeans, a purple bandana with some crows on it, combat boots, and a red bandana tied around his left bicep) is standing in a forest with his wand raised and visible indicators of magic (streams of colored light) hover in the air. The cover has a purpleish overtone. The faint smell of woodsmoke hung in the chilly morning air, a subtle indicator that the fire had died out hours ago. My gaze shifted over the deserted campsite. Too quiet. It was all too quiet even for early morning. Usually, I’d walk out of my tent and hear the mumbled complaints of the men who’d dragged themselves out of their bedrolls already or the snores of those who hadn’t. Silence meant they’d gone off roaming in the middle of the night searching for a way to indulge in some form of debauchery, and now I was stuck having to hunt them down like their names were in my bounty book. “Freki! Rusty! Bard!” I called into the still air just in case they were somewhere nearby. Out of my whole crew, those three were the most likely to actually come back in the morning without me having to go off searching for them. Three relatively responsible ones out of a crew of ten plus myself. Not a good balance.

Recently I made some changes to Shrouded Guard. These changes included a new cover. But the biggest, and most important change, is some major character name changes. I also ended up republishing the ebook version because the zon doesn't push updated interior ebook files to those who've previously purchased it or downloaded it (barring special circumstances that don't apply here). So, I ended up republishing the ebook version. But I want to be fair to my readers who've already gotten the book (no matter in what form). So I'm doing a free ebook sale for Shrouded Guard from October 29th until November 2nd. All you have to do is go over to amazon during the sale and redeem it. (Also, if the sale isn't available for you for ANY reason, please let me know and I'll be happy to send you an updated ebook copy). Also, if you want a direct link, I'm happy to provide that as well.

(Unedited) Excerpt from Grimoire Archive: Shrouded Curses book 3 (and one of the only times I've ever used the word sparkle across 3 WIPS)
I set my cellphone back on my nightstand and dragged myself out of bed. Fatigue weighed my body down, a sure sign that I hadn’t slept well. At least I wasn’t waking up with splitting migraines or bruises and pains I didn’t remember getting, both courtesy of the Curse taking over. I could handle tiredness on its own, or even in conjunction with the aches brought on by competition riding. I’d already dealt with both when I first got back into riding. Bright morning sunlight streamed through the window once I pulled back the curtains. This time of year, most of the trees had taken to resembling the ones from my nightmare, except for the towering pines. A quick glance out the window gave me a nice view of both mixed together across the street. Frost sparkled on the grass and porch roof below, a bit of beauty that served as a reminder that it was a new day. Even if I couldn’t change the past, I had the opportunity to look ahead. At the very least, it helped chase the last remnants of the Curse’s face out of my mind. It’s okay. He’s banished to the Nightmare Dimension. He can’t hurt anyone there.

The main setting for Grimoire Archive: Underground Alchemist book 1 is definitely bleak and messed up.
I stared at the branch for a few moments before shifting my attention to the faded numbers bolted to the front of the house, 1030, and committed them to memory. If nothing else, knowing this could be invaluable in finding out more about the girls’ past, if it became necessary. Clearly, no one else had moved into this place. Surprising, considering how deep the social problems ran in this city.

A moment when an enemy finally tries to understand what someone's been trying to tell them for months.
“It’s hard to explain, but it has something to do with my power.” I was sure I’d already talked to him about this, when he’d argued with me about splitting up. “If I use my power on someone but don’t actively control them, I can mentally communicate with them. It’s…weird.” “Yeah… Weird can describe a lot of things lately.” He squirmed uncomfortably. “Uh…about that guy yesterday…the Curse…” I tilted my head slightly to one side, unsure what to say. “Can we talk about it?” I gave a shallow nod. “I’m not sure what else there is to say. But, if you have questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.”

An excerpt from Grimoire Archive: Bounty Hunter book 1

Harlyn (my FMC) has been through some shit prior to the start of the book.
Images of that fight flashed through my mind, and I could almost feel the pain of one of their spells again. Not the carnificina spell—the dark arts torture spell. The one that left me with the spell damage scars on my side—the one I still hadn’t found any reference to. I wanted to be brave, wanted to face these men without hesitation, wanted to best them in a magic fight just to prove that someone from a nilmana family could beat them. But the memories wouldn’t let me go. I couldn’t even think of the best spell to use, let alone focus enough to cast it or speak an incantation. All it would take was for the Reaper who hit me that night to be here now, for him to use the same spell, for me to end up in the same position—knocked unconscious on the floor and waking up in the hospital, if they didn’t do worse to us.

In the Grimoire Archive time period, there are sentient Curses (not widely known, essentially "spirit" entities from the Nightmare Dimension) that are mostly associated with evil because they can/do possess people and use them/their magic to create chaos.

Xavier Roscoe is definitely one of my favorite side characters in the Shrouded Curses arc of the Grimoire Archive series. He's a member of the Curse Breakers Guild and a "ride-or-die" best friend to one of the MCs. Also, he *may* get a bit more of a moment to shine in a companion book.

Urban Fantasy No one ever talks about what happens after a curse is broken… Moving back to the area surrounding Dekorth City is the last thing Marek Isamat wants. Between trying to hide his identity from those who might seek revenge for what happened in the past and adjusting to college and work, Marek has his work cut out for him. Even without the Curse randomly taking control, even with his power blocked, trouble still lurks around every corner. And two Curse Breakers pay the Isamat family a visit to warn of a potential new threat. If that wasn’t concerning enough, a series of seemingly random accidents start plaguing the same group of friends that Marek’s curse targeted all those years ago, he’s immediately blamed. And when two women go missing under suspicious circumstances, Marek can’t help but wonder if they’re connected to the Curse Breakers’ warning. But what can he do about it? Marek’s power was never meant to help people, only to bring suffering. Is there even a way to use mind control to figure out what happened and clear his name when it brought suspicion in the first place? Grimoire Archive is set in the Confederacy of Uskait (a post-apocalypse and post-rebuilding-of-society fantasy country that encompasses all of what is currently North America & currently most of Central America). Uskait is divided into 23 regions (some are representative led & others are guild led)
