The White House contention is that commission review of WH building projects is not required for demolition, only construction. They may be trying to, uh, expedite approval by starting with a big hole. A WH staffer sitting in the NCPC chair seat won’t hurt either www.nytimes.com/2025/10/21/a...

Watched the film about the 1988 Chilean referendum that ended Pinochet’s rule: No. Really good on democratic messaging under autocracy.

How French: France declined to vote for Greenwich meridian/mean time as the international reference back in 1884, slow-walked switching over to it, and then came up with its own "Paris time" equivalent that it used until the late 1970s.

TIL the guy who led the DC Hanafi siege in the 1970s also converted Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Islam. And Abdul-Jabbar bought the Shepherd Park house where the Hanafi group lived (and where there was a horrific multiple murder, which precipitated the siege)

As the Arctic warms, its sea ice is patchier and easier to break up. That's led to strong demand for icebreaker ships as countries jockey for power. Canada is doubling its fleet; the US wants to increase its own tenfold. But Russia has a massive lead [gift link] www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
