The strength of nominating letters will be the primary basis for selecting the pool of finalists for the prize. Strong nominating letters should provide first-hand accounts of how the nominee has proved to be an inspirational classroom teacher or thesis supervisor.

With all due respect, and may Trump rot in hell, this is a bad take. Test scores are the hardest part of a college application to purchase. Test optional admissions have been a boondoggle.

Yes but what's the right counterfactual? Without the carrot of tenure, surely the publication trajectory before the review would not be so steep.

For these reasons it's helpful to know and be able to articulate your goals for a particular class. A lot of faculty don't even seem to know what they want their students to be getting out of the experience.

It would also be foolish to think that the counterfactual without a tenure system would lead to a trajectory similarly shaped in the first period. Tenure is an inducement to bust your ass.
