Dogwalk to the mighty Southmead round barrow yesterday. Difficult to get a sense of its scale but it’s BIG. 🏺

It’s been an odd day on social media discussing the horns of Moses! And now by complete coincidence - @mappadan.bsky.social and @wittspat.bsky.social - look what I’ve just seen in the National Gallery dating to 1290-95! This is Moses breaking up a fight! 🏺

Look what arrived from @livunipress.bsky.social! Many thanks - really looking forward to reading it in depth! A quick canter through already and it is fascinating. 🏺

Travelling to the Big Smoke tomorrow for the Museums and Heritage Awards ceremony. We are shortlisted for our #Stonehenge lunar research 🌙 partnership project…. Fingers crossed! 🏺

he nearest I’ll get to viewing a Neolithic village in twilight. (Reconstructed houses based on excavated floor plans from Durrington Walls). Stonehenge visitor centre. 🏺

Off to Stonehenge today to talk to the Neolithic Studies Group about archaeoastronomy at Stonehenge. This 📸 taken last month during a lunar research field trip. 🏺

Is this five-sided church apse in my village the remains of an Anglo-Saxon church? If so, it was much altered later (including the crypt which housed the remains of the medieval Bishop John Carpenter). The five sides are more apparent inside the church. 🏺

A memorial to “Mary” - much else gone. I’ve never ever seen a gravestone weather like this before. In the churchyard of the mighty Amesbury Abbey, Wiltshire. #archaeology #church #churchcrawling 🏺

My best photo of this morning’s partial solar eclipse. Taken with my iPhone looking through my eclipse glasses - all a bit Heath Robinson! Was lucky enough to see the whole thing.

Solar eclipse right now in the UK! Got my glasses! 😎😎😎 - get those colanders out!

We are half way to the Solstice today! Here is Stonehenge looking wonderful at the last summer solstice. 🏺 #equinox

Tried but no luck yet! Moon very bright….

Trying to view the most northerly moonset at Stonehenge last night - sadly the moon disappeared behind this bank of cloud before set. Nevertheless, a great night. 🏺#lunarresearch

One of the oldest doors in my village, around 1445, made of oak and original. Bears the cross of the medieval Bishop Carpenter of Oxford University and Worcester Cathedral fame. (He was buried in the adjacent church). 🏺

The Plough (Big Dipper) over Stonehenge last night. Mixed results for our lunar research but a very worthwhile trip. Much warmer last night too! #bonus 🏺

There was a concerted effort by the County Archaeologist to improve things and it really worked. Including the installation of public art.

Dog walk to my nearest round barrow, looking good after its recent haircut! Well done to Bristol Council for looking after it so we can all enjoy this nationally important monument. 🏺

A beauty tonight

Here are the Pleiades as they weren’t in the above photo. They were very bright. So difficult to see from towns today, but would have been well-known in prehistory. #astronomy #PlanetaryParade #darkskies

Beautiful #darkskies in the Surrey Hills last night; Mars, Jupiter and Venus once again clearly visible. And the Pleiades with the naked eye. You’ll have to zoom in!
