I found my passion in journalism at 15 after experiencing anti-Asian hate and seeing reporters amplify my voice. Now, victims feel like their stories are not important just because the media moved on. In @rachelswarns.bsky.social’s class, I’m digging into how that silence fuels more hate.

Yesterday, I spoke with an anti-Asian hate crime victim who was violently beaten on the train nearly two years ago by three teenage girls. She told me that law enforcement made it hard for her to report the crime and how she felt like they didn’t take her report seriously. Her story is one of many.

Only 56% of hate crime incidents result in arrests in 2023, according to the New York State Comptroller. Some advocates say that cops and district attorneys downplay them - even when racial slurs or racially motivated attacks are involved.
