Small fritillary butterfly sitting on young green birch tree leaves. Butterfly wings are closed and butterfly is in a roosting position with its antennae held back along its body. Butterfly wings are dark brown on the base half and paler brown, with a faint violet tinge in the top half colour. Between these two colour areas is a very distinct white band made up of irregular white splodges.

Smallish butterfly sitting on green bog myrtle leaves in a wet bog habitat. The wings are open and are a vibrant deep blue colour with a black border and then a white border along the edge of all the wings.

Butterfly sitting on end of green leaf. Wings are closed and white with broad black margins. The wings have a metallic green arc in the black marginal band. The prescence of the green arc on the forewing distinguishes this species from the very similar looking Tailed Green-line Blue. The hind wings have a row of black dots in the green arc, and they do not have any tails.

There is a small tail at the end of each of the hind wings. The closed wings hide a bright blue upper wing, which shows brilliantly when it flies.
