Pittman developed a therapeutic antiserum for meningitis caused by a strain of Haemophilus influenza and was involved in the research of vaccines for pertussis (whooping cough), typhoid, tetanus and cholera.

In 1894 Williams isolated a strain of diphtheria bacillus which was used to produce the first antitoxin for diphtheria. In 1898 she created a rabies vaccine and later developed a rapid diagnostic test for rabies.
