If plarail can make Thomas the train for his 80th birthday surely they can remake their best ever model, c53 45, for their next anniversary.

Our broad gauge X class 2-8-2 have almost the same tractive power than the 9F (39,360 ibf), but the tractive effort is far greater than the D51 and the 9F when a booster is fitted (48,360 lbf). All but 1 of the X class had these boosters fitted, one of these was converted to burn brown coal.

D2 604 is significant for being the only preserved original DD class locomotive, and is quite interesting and stands out from the preserved 15 D3 class locomotives. The museum also holds a tank version of the DD class (D4 268), which is also a sole survivor.

D2 604 last ran sometime in 1961 and was set aside for preservation, eventually making its way to the Newport Railway Museum in 1962 where it now resides today.

Renumbered to D2 604 in the 1950s, the locomotive was officially withdrawn from VR service in 1956 having been some of the last remaining OG DDs in service. Rather than being scrapped, D2 604 was sold to the Australian Paper Mills for shunting work. It was slightly modified and given a “new” tender.

It should also be mentioned by this stage, VR already had reclassed the original DD classes prior to this, making the non-superheated ones D1 and the superheated ones D2. DD 795 was one of these and was reclassed as D2 795 in 1929.

In 1929, Victorian Railways tried fitting a DD class locomotive with a K class boiler, the resulting engine being a total success. This led to an additional 93 DDs being rebuilt with this new boiler and classed as D3.

DD 557 itself went through some renumberings, firstly being renumbered to 580 in 1925, and to 795 in 1926.

From 1914 onwards, some DDs were fitted with superheaters to improve on their steam capabilities and were more successful. DD 557 was one of the locomotives given a super heater.

This locomotive was built originally as DD 557 in 1912 by Beyer Peacock as part of Victorian Railways’ DD class mix-traffic locos, of which 261 were built.
