The challenge is to convince kids the very pencil they are holding may contain the best words they've ever written. Attitude's everything.

Came across the 15th Century word- 'wonderclout,' meaning something that is showy, but worthless. The word intrigues me. It set me to thinking about present day items and actions that might qualify as wonderclouts. I already have a few- lava lamps, jet skis, scented candles. You can't list people.

When I have the opportunity to include rich and wonderful words like blattering, fizmer, grumbletonians, and groke in a writing project (verse novel) it reinforces the joy that flows from writing. #loveoflanguage

When a teacher suggests that the reason they give students writing topics/sentence starters is because 'they can't think of any of their own' that wonderful old word balderdash comes to mind.

I posed the question- Why do you think poets use white space?
Student: To fill up the page.

Has anyone noticed that you can turn any noun into an insult simply by prefacing it with the word ‘absolute'?
-Absolute toilet brush!
-Absolute potato!
-Absolute door handle!

Vividly recall seeing a father hand his young daughter the boarding pass as they entered a plane flight to Darwin allowing her to discover how it all works with some guiding questions. She worked it out and found their seats.
Kids learn limitations from us. They can also discover the possibilities.

Ode To The Wishy Washy

Norman declined to state his position
So when issues arose
He had no opposition
Local or global
Small or immense
Norman preferred
To sit on the fence
There he sat perched
Atop the palings
His lack of commitment
Merely adding to his failings.

You won't have to look in the obituaries, it will just become suddenly very noisy outside, regardless of what time of day it is. People will be shooting off fireworks, and honking horns, and laughing and crying, and it's going to be like that for quite a while when it finally happens.

Sometimes I think about paying attention to American politics again, and then I remember to be kind to myself instead.

When a teacher writes with students something magical begins to happen. The teacher begins to learn better ways to both write and teach.

'Tell me more about your idea' says teacher enthusiastically to student.
Overheard this recently.

It's Poetry Friday! A visit to a local greengrocery sparked this poem. Something of an ode to fresh produce. Vegetable inspired verse proved very fruitful to this poet.
