National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, meanwhile, is fending off a mutiny by nearly 500 self-identified staff — some perhaps laid off in reduction-in-force plans — based in part on an alleged "list of banned words" in grants recommended for funding, especially those related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
"This one is really frustrating," Bhattacharya [said]. He informed representatives of the "Bethesda Declaration," named after NIH's Maryland home base, at their July 21 meeting that "I ordered there be no banned list" to his staff months ago, but some program officers "took it upon themselves" to create ad hoc, unofficial lists.
Ed: in fact, HHS and DOGE, above Bhattacharya's head, have been terminating grants for 'banned words.' Program officers have been helping scientists to avoid those cancellations by noting which words they have seen the Trump HHS terminating grants for. If there indeed was an actual order, Bhattacharya hasn't been able to make it stick.

It's funny to see this, which shows at bottom that the Trump NIH director, Bhattacharya, has no power.
He may have "ordered" there be no banned word list, but the grant rejections due to banned words and content are coming from HHS. Above his head.
Bhattacharya is a puppet who has little or no power. Russell Vought and RFK Jr are running the show at NIH.
What is he doing if he has no influence? Bhattacharya appears to be filling his spare time with rightwing, or gateway-to-the-right, podcasts and conservative media hits: Fox, Bari Weiss, Hoover Institution, Reason, Huberman, Bill Ackman, and now this interview*.
Meanwhile, Bhattacharya is giving "orders" and his bosses Vought and RFK are ignoring his "orders."
