Although I guess one could write some themes, but I didn't choose to

Specifically, I couldn't find mobile friendly themes for them. That's really important.

Those are cool too, but unfortunately modern BBs have non-negligible UX improvements, and nostalgia power only works on people our age (making an assumption here, I know 😜)

Although you probably can't beat phpBB on being cheap to run and easy on client machines
February 12, 2026 at 11:43 PM
I prefer NodeBB to Discourse because it's just about as good on features, but it's cheaper to run and the client is lighter, too.
February 12, 2026 at 11:37 PM
NodeBB is very nice and light, easy to set up, and it federates over ActivityPub! I took down the one I had set up last year because it wasn't being used much, but I would be happy to support anyone who wants to try however I can

Lovely, thanks!

Gotta maintain cognitive and spiritual hygiene. That said I don't know what this is

I guess "culture war stuff" is super reductionist, and dismissive in a way that's not always warranted. I apologize for that. I'm still struggling to come up with a better way of putting what I'm trying to say.
February 5, 2026 at 10:46 PM
I live in Minnesota and at this incredibly historical moment there are no Jewish politics here that I can see at all; just the same culture war stuff as everyone else. And in this regard I can say from personal experience that the Hareidim are just as assimilated as the Reconstructionists.
February 5, 2026 at 10:43 PM
I honesty wish that there was less focus on how Jews identify wrt Zionism, and more about how our Jewishness informs and produces our actual values and politics. Both in regards to the Diaspora's relationship with Israel, but also in regards to our relationship with our own countries.

If the 2028 platform is not Reconstruction But All The Way This Time, fascism will just make more comebacks
February 5, 2026 at 12:11 AM
That can be your platform in 2032. In 2028 the only platform Accountability followed by Reconstruction
February 5, 2026 at 12:03 AM
This is BECAUSE Reconstruction was a failure

People who talk like that are a significant part of the reason that the Left has accomplished so much in the last 80 years in this country.

Remember when some FRSO fella was calling neighborhood defenders over South "gated community wannabes" back in 2020?

Hear, hear
February 4, 2026 at 12:53 AM
I think either it's well thought up or this is quite serendipitous for the perpetrators
February 4, 2026 at 12:46 AM
Very clever bit of lateral thinking if it was planned. Instead of gutting the courts, gut the DOJ. Same result...
February 4, 2026 at 12:05 AM
The clearest illustration of what you're talking about I've seen is Theodore Herzl's 1897 essay Mauschel.

"A Jew is a human being like any other... Mauschel, on the other hand, is a distortion of human character, something unspeakably low and repugnant."

(Mauschel is a German slur for Jew)

Who the hell is Thane Rosenbaum?! Clearly some people will do anything, in public, to justify their monstrous beliefs.

Judaism is a very well organized religion, it's just organized horizontally, like mycelium

I don't go to Beth El, but to the Orthodox synagogues in the neighborhood. When I go, which isn't often these days. But my kid goes there sometimes for bar/bas mitzvos. I'm glad you like it there, though.

Sure, but this is the kind of thing we can have an argument about as individuals and a society; whereas secret police disappearances isn't.

What do I care if someone is Christian, if they aren't trying to make me Christian too? What do I care if someone thinks I'm a sinner if they are not making it their business to force me to stop being a sinner according to their lights?

That is what pluralism is: the belief that very very different people can and should live alongside each other in agreement that we are all very different and should respect, if not love, our right to all be who we are.
