While Canada has lost elimination status, the US hasn't (yet)

We have until mid-January 2026 to break the chains of transmission - get rid of the weed's roots - before we lose elimination status

Will the US succeed? We hope so, but with 🧠🪱 in charge... we're up against some big hurdles

Losing elimination status is a sign that measles is a big problem again, bigger than just outbreak response as needed

The virus has taken root in the community, like a weed

And the unseen roots - all the cases that don't get reported and spread measles to others - keep measles going

Measles is "eliminated" when there's no community measles transmission for at least 12 months

☑ Community transmission: Catching measles from someone local while doing regular everyday things

❌Not community transmission: Travel abroad ✈ get measles 🦠 go back home 🏠

They're claiming that reversing RIFs and guaranteeing backpay for feds is worth losing leverage for ACA subsidies

But we KNOW the shutdown RIFs have been illegal and that the courts will eventually back this up

and we KNOW backpay is legally mandated (thanks Trump 1.0 🥴)

"Like an ancient cyborg culling through the ruins of a post-apocalyptic planet (twitter, derogatory), Joyce Carol Oates recently fired her full-power death ray at aspiring trillionaire Elon Musk, whose childish attempts to justify his riches prompted this, from JCO (who will never stop tweeting)."

9/9 Bottom line: Teen sex ed in the U.S. is uneven, politicized, and under threat from misinformation (especially under the current administration). Public health outcomes depend as much on policy & politics as on biology or education science 🔬

8/9 Teen pregnancy rates have dropped, but STI rates remain high. Knowledge gaps persist. What teens learn is shaped by policies, funding, parents, and social media--all uneven and sometimes contradictory 📊
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
7/9 Social media isn’t just a supplement; it’s a primary source for many teens. That’s a double-edged sword: info is available, but so is harmful mis/disinformation--think...young people abrutly stopping birth control after watching TikTok videos 📱
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
6/9 Schools are still a main source of info, but patchy. Most students learn about STIs & refusal skills. Fewer than half learn about contraception or where to access it. Some don’t even hear about healthy relationships 💡
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
5/9 Parents matter--sometimes a lot, sometimes less... Most teens talk to parents about STIs or saying no to sex, but far fewer discuss contraception.

1 in 5 teens get zero sex ed from home 👪
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
4/9 Federal funding is a rollercoaster. Changes in administration can expand or cut support for comprehensive sex ed. Trump-era policies around "two sexes only" also restricted LGBTQ+ inclusion in education programs 🏛️
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
3/9 Sex ed varies wildly by state & school district. Some programs are comprehensive (contraception, healthy relationships), others push abstinence-only. What kids actually learn depends more on politics than science 🏫
November 10, 2025 at 5:50 PM
2/9 Teens today face a maze of info sources: schools, parents, friends, & increasingly, social media. Post-Roe, official resources are limited, and disinfo spreads fast online ⚠️
