Identity stuff

missing out on 10 years of your life is probably going to do things to you mentally. and of course it does for E-ki

it's hard to comprehend. he missed out on the last years of his adolescence. he can't get those wasted years back, they're lost forever. legally, he's now 27 years old, but he sure as hell doesn't feel that way! he's still emotionally a teenager at heart, whose desires remain wanting to see his friends again and for them to be happy

despite this, he's suddenly expected to mature and act like a grown adult by others even though he never properly experienced that period of transition between late teenhood and early adulthood. it really sucks

he has to learn to adapt really quickly especially when it comes to providing emotional support for others (mainly, his family) despite not being in a particularly emotionally mature state of mind himself

E-ki is not really the same person he was pre-coma, obviously. he's overall a much more anxious person, and much of the cheekiness and confidence he displayed before has been replaced with awkwardness and a tendency towards self-deprecation and doubt. of course, he tries to compensate for other people's sake, but this often leads to him becoming easily overwhelmed and panicked

it's a bit unclear on how he feels about his past self, but it seems to be a mixture of shame (for some of the more foolish/ignorant behaviors he remembers) and... guilt? for the fact that he can't truly be that same energetic E-ki people loved and relied on anymore

he's emotionally vulnerable as hell. E-ki knows this himself, but he doesn't do very much to stand up for himself if he gets harassed. he's like a kicked puppy. if anything, he's more likely to internalize criticism and negative feelings (esp. resentment) directed towards him and take the blame for things he's not even at fault for, believing that he deserves every bad thing that comes to him. have I said that this guy has a guilty conscience

that being said, E-ki WILL get upset/mad when disrespect is directed towards the people he cares about (such as the film club and E-noru). no tolerance there. it's really easy to rile him up this way actually

he's non-binary btw, he just doesn't know it yet.

this is my headcanon about every E-ki; for post-coma E-ki in particular, he would probably have too much going on to realize this for another few years

this may never become relevant to rptwt

it took me like a month or two but i finally wrote down my main ideas for general post-coma interpretation. note that this was mainly written with my e-ki twitter rp account's context in mind (1/2)

#shuuenpro < for organizational purposes

GENERAL IDEAS

E-ki wakes up from his coma. He does NOT entirely want this. guy who much would have preferred either death or living in his memories for the rest of his lifetime over being conscious and forced to cope with the reality of his friends being dead

Coma and/or traumatic brain injury complications. there's a lot of these

disclaimer: I'm an able-bodied person who doesn't have a history with long-term physical impairment. I've tried my best to portray disability for E-ki in a realistic and respectful manner, but if there's anything you think I should change, let me know

severe muscle atrophy from disuse. He likely stays in a rehabilitation center for several months and receives physical therapy both during and after his care. and even then, his muscles will never recover to the same state they were prior to the incident

he uses mobility aids to help him move around. he uses a wheelchair during early recovery, and then transitions to using forearm crutches after he regains enough strength in his arms

long-term TBI complications

memory problems. both short-term and long-term. especially noticeable for E-ki when it comes to trying to recall events prior to the incident. more on that later

motor impairment. has to gradually relearn a lot of fine motor skills after the incident. still struggles a bit with hand-eye coordination by the time of rptwt

susceptibility to psychiatric problems. already a given from the consequences of being traumatized by the incident, but a TBI contributes to it further

one thing's for certain: he's a lot less energetic than before! I mean, E-ki's not quite the same person he was pre-incident for various reasons. He's notably quieter, moodier, and prone to depression. his physical energy levels also aren't nearly as high as they were before. he experiences fatigue more often

okay, time to expand more on his psychological state. there's a lot going on there.

Expectedly, it is very difficult for him to initially see the value to living in reality, 10 years later. there's a lot of strategies he initially adopts to cope. these begin to decrease in frequency as he heals and becomes more accepting of his situation later on

post-coma E-ki strikes me as the type of person to be really "gullible", but in the sense that when presented between two possibilities of truth for a stressful situation, he'd much rather believe the less emotionally painful option, no matter how unrealistic it may be. i.e. if an idea is more appealing/ideal/happy in his eyes, his brain would rather believe that than a more painful truth

his brain does a lot to protect him from unpleasant truths, or to protect the idea that those days he spent with his friends truly were "perfect" in his mind, barring the obvious tragedy

he doesn't tend to be very grounded to reality in general. I feel like post-coma E-ki would be very prone to dissociation, as well as any external suggestions that something is Not real (addendum: hypnotic susceptibility)

dissociation being an especially common mechanism that brains can adopt after trauma! worsened by the fact he's surrounded by constant reminders and stressors

E-ki tries to nap A Lot, whether it's out of desperate hopes of seeing his friends again in his dreams, or if it's just to escape reality and the passing of time in general

to his frustration, most of the time, he's dreamless.

when he does dream, it's usually a nightmare, often of:

the film club's corpses

false awakenings. dreams inside dreams inside dreams inside dreams

experiencing long stretches of time that end with everyone else dying

Grief is of course, a major thing E-ki has to deal with! 10 years of his life were spent in the first stage of denial, living in a repeated, perfect fantasy where nothing would go wrong until the very end

being awake, he can't deny that the film club is dead anymore, that's for sure. however, this doesn't stop him from being neurotic about it

E-ki can't seem to escape the past. the film club's absence haunts him evidently, and reminders of his friends plague him no matter where he goes. he misses them. His heart aches for them deeply, and it's the strongest feeling he knows. He's seized by homesickness, because to him, the film club was like a home to him. They were his everything.

When he shuts his eyes for too long, images of the film club's corpses flash into his mind. he sees that same nightmare, playing over and over again. he can't seem to avoid or forget it, which distresses him greatly

Survivor's guilt for sure! he does not believe he deserves to be alive. he has a lot of complicated feelings regarding this

I suppose it's good it's not like he's alone in his grief (W-sensei)

I haven't thought too much about what their relationship post-canon would theoretically be like, but I'd imagine there would always be an air of sadness in their interactions

E-ki would probably ask him a lot about the film club in his attempts to remember more about them, which brings me to talking about...

Long-term memory issues. lot of stuff going on with these. E-ki doesn't reliably remember many things from pre-incident in general, which leads to problems

Film Club

He has difficulty remembering the FC members' names and faces. unfortunately, he remembers them best by their deaths, and due to the particular states of their corpses, he finds it much harder to remember A-no's and B-ka's faces than C-na's and D-suke's

he struggles to recall details of his happiest memories with them, the members' specific tastes and quirks, etc.

this ends up fueling his neurotic grief-driven habits

He quickly becomes obsessed with the notion of preserving the memory of the film club as much as possible. he begins to collect and study any mementos he find from the past relating to the FC, including the photos that W-sensei took of them at the school festival. E-ki studies them intensely, trying to carve every detail of their faces and their expressions into his memory.

he keeps a journal to write down as many things he remembers or finds out about the film club as he can. Everything possible. descriptions of their appearances, their names, specific memories like the festival events. it soothes him to an extent, but on the other hand, he gets really distressed noticing how much is missing. how much he's forgotten

if he ever manages to encounter the audio commentary tapes or copy of the film, I don't think he'll want to part from those ever again.

the absolutely absurd concept of joker being a shuuenpro fan and accepting maruki's reality specifically because of shuuen is always really funny to me

You were truly happy whenever you were with them, and you wanted these ordinary days to continue forever; the ones where you could just lightheartedly banter and chat without a care in the world, and your friends were by your side. You don't want to lose them. The idea of losing those bonds you nurtured was something you couldn't bear thinking about.

Even when they were still here, you always missed them. Every time you left school, you'd always think about the next time you'd see them. The topics you discussed, whether they were about the film or the mundane; the disagreements you got into over the pettiest things; every time you learned something new from them; their smiles, and their faces— All of it was important to you. Every memory was precious. How much could you say you still remembered of all of it? Of them?

With your incomplete and gradually vanishing memories, can you really say that you knew them at all? That you did well to memorize their favorite colors, their tastes, their hopes, their fears—

You won't let yourself forget. You can't let go—no, you won't let go. You forbid it.

self-indulgent eldritch e-ki AU. enabling myself to OC-ify this guy i guess

the most self-indulgent nonsensical thing ever. AU where E-ki is an eldritch being posing as a human. he doesn't directly tell the film club this but every other member has individually come to this conclusion on their own because while most people either rationalize the oddities/uncanniness as just "he's just weird like that" the film club has been around E-ki frequently enough to see him slip up multiple times and Know something is up. no one knows What he is, but it doesn't matter much, because he's still E-ki in the end and they love him

I kind of project a lot onto him for the sake of this AU mainly because I myself have weird feelings about the idea of being a person/human. and something something I also find personal comfort in non-human-centered narratives as metaphors for something. iykwim

okay actual logistics regarding eldritch-ki:
- he was kind of just. born like this? either that or there was an incident when he was an infant while his parents weren't looking where he got kidnapped by otherworldly entities or something.
- e-ki himself does not remember when he started "being" like this, though his memories regarding a "before" in general are kind of vague
- his immediate family probably knows and just. accepts it or something. it's not like he's malicious
- his true form/appearance is not human-looking, but he alters the senses (sight, touch, hearing) of every living being that perceives him so that he Appears human to them
- it's not a perfect illusion. as some of the film club members have noticed, trying to look at E-ki from the peripherals of their vision causes his figure to distort to look like Something Else. no one can describe what they see, though
- re:E-ki's slipups. mainly minor things
- sometimes his figure doesn't cast a shadow on the floor
- sometimes his outline glitches a little
- sometimes it sounds like his voice is coming from all directions instead of just the direction of his human form
- sometimes he appears in locations that shouldn't be humanly possible to reach in a short span of time
- fun!
- it becomes a lot harder for him to maintain the illusion when it's dark. like if you're in a room with him and you turn off the lights he might straight up seem to disappear altogether or become intangible
- I like to think in contrast to the otherworldly nature, personality-wise this guy is pretty much the same as in canon
- I think it'd be really funny and endearing if he was still really bad with horror. like buddy I think ghosts would have a reason to be scared of You

- his need for sleep is less often than a human's, but when he does sleep he gets nightmares more often than the average E-ki
- usually his nightmares are relating to surviving tragedies or the world ending. or losing his friends and everyone he loves to the infinite stretch of time. or fucking up big time and hurting people. or his secret being revealed and everyone being disgusted or scared of him. things like that
- ^world's least obvious projection
- speaking of which, he never tells the film club directly. he's also kind of oblivious that they all already know. kind of funny.
- I want to capture the idea of a non-human creature who struggles to see oneself as a person but wants to be perceived as a person / humanized so so badly
- this also makes the whole urban legend theme of the film a lot funnier.
- this is all meant to be more humorous and fun rather than horrifying so yeah
- re:canon events. either they don't happen, or they do still happen mostly the same, to E-ki's despair, and E-ki grieves in a very extreme way either:
1. he lets the coma + coma dream happen, and his nature explains how he can just Keep going for 10+ years without dying
2. or he disappears. no one can ever find him in a human-looking form ever again. as it turns out, not even eldritch beings can bring back the dead!

i think it's ironic how my brain has the tendency to come up with relatively realistic/grounded in reality shuuen dreams

IM SO MAD IM SO MAD IM SO MAD. I DREAMT THERE WAS A 09:02 VIDEO SHUUEN FAN ANIMATION UPLOADED 5 MONTHS AGO ON YOUTUBE ON THE JP SIDE OF THE FANBASE. It was voice acted/dubbed and everything. it was mainly occult club-centric (unfortunately) and also excluded E-noru (unfortunately). BUT IT SUBSCRIBED TO B-KA MURDERER THEORY and involved D-ne like. confronting some shapeshifting entity (...distorted voice???) who implied at least that B-ka survived/was the film club killer. first by mentioning only the letters A, C, D, and E when talking about the film club.

I had a false awakening from that dream where I proceeded to open Discord on my phone, navigate to Shuuencord, and dramatically bury my head in my hands and scream
