But I suppose “crime leaps to new levels” makes a better headline than “reported crime rate is now a more accurate reflection of true rate thanks to improved methods of collection and assessment”.

This kind of “never used to happen in my day” nonsense is trotted-out when they don’t understand that the *reported* number of crimes and the *true* number of crimes committed aren’t the same.

In the distant past we only thought there were a few stars and planets up there. And then we developed the telescope and the universe *apparently* “got bigger”. They were always there, we were just unable to see them.

Apply same logic here.

Imagine the conversation on the passing spacecraft… “oh they got to *that* stage”.
