Finally, the very bottom of the NOFO lists a bunch of contacts that can help applicants out. Scientific questions go to the Program Officers, Budget questions go to Grants Management, and review questions go to the Scientific Review Officers.

These criteria also include additional review criteria, as shown below.

Just as important as the submission criteria are the review criteria. Applicants should keep these in mind, as these are the guidelines the reviewers follow when judging the scientific merit of the applications.

Below the general application submission guidelines, you’ll find other criteria. Again, these may change for some initiatives. In this case, it links to other guide documents, where more comprehensive instructions can be found.

The next sections get into the nitty gritty of the science sections. For specific initiatives, this is where you’ll find specific criteria for the initiative.

The next section has more info about awards for this particular NOFO: what types of applications are allowed, specifics about allowable budget, and how long the award period is.

Just down from the goals are the due dates. Pay careful attention to these!!!! For new applications, the first column has the dates that the applications have to be submitted to be considered. Renewal and resubmissions have different due dates.

The next section covers the goals. They are pretty broad for the R01, but may be more specific for other NOFOs. Does your research align with the stated goals? If not, it may not be a good fit for this opportunity.

There may be related NOFOs, that will be linked just below the title, related notices, and NOFO number.
July 28, 2025 at 10:02 PM
Next, you can tell if this NOFO is new or reissued, and any connected announcements by looking at this info, which includes the title of the NOFO and whether or not the NOFO allows clinical trials.
July 28, 2025 at 10:02 PM
The first step is making sure that the institute that supports your research area has signed on to that NOFO. That is the list you see at the top of the announcement. If you don’t see your favorite listed on a NOFO, you will want to talk to the program officer.

Actually, the cancer deaths were not so different as compared to other countries. But everything else was higher in the US.

Offering another #AltCitizen, or group of citizens, rather. The NIH All Of Us Program is truly an effort of #AllOfUs. Volunteer participants from all walks of like across the US who want to contribute to scientific progress provide biological samples.

Running a little behind in sharing the next NIH #AltCitizen.
Dr. Anthony Fauci has dedicated his career to public service. While the pandemic brought controversy to the stage, it should be stated first and foremost that Dr. Fauci cares for his patients and the people of the USA. 1/n

#AltCitizen Ruth L. Kirschstein left an indelible mark on the National Institutes of Health. She served as NIGMS Director, NIH Principal Deputy Director, and Acting NIH Director (twice). Her advocacy for the training of future scientists led to Congress renaming training awards in her honor.
