Leaving Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts / Harvard Film Archive - just attended an excellent talk by Neta Alexander (Yale) on multimodal AI, labor, and disability (to put it far too simply); walking away with spinning thoughts and a big reading list…

Also, PTA’s interest in exploring (and interrogating) fathers / father figures now has me thinking of this quote from Terminator 2

Currently rewatching Terminator 2 for the millionth time (never a bad time to do so) after reading @brofromanother.bsky.social sharp, insightful review of One Battle After Another.

Yesterday’s cinema experience; seen in glorious VistaVision at @thecoolidge.bsky.social (one of only 4 locations selected to screen the film this way!) - the print/projection looked stunning, and the film was one I immediately wanted to revisit.

Everyone is hungry to hear his take on the male loneliness discourse in-between AI-generated ads for hallucinated meal kits and email services

I feel this has the same vibe / graphics as, like, a DTV American Pie sequel or similar comedy franchise bargain bin spinoff (though there is indeed something more “cursed” about this ad…)

Site that seduces you into the Druid cult supposedly responsible for The Shape’s drive to kill on the night of Samhain? You mean Thornhub.

“Rather than conceiving of cinema as a discrete medium defined by films with tidy borders, then, my book regards film as essentially protean and generative— easily "unbound" and remixed by the media involved in circulation” (Klinger, 2022) - something not new to AI or The Sphere

“I conceive of cinema's endurance as a medium and a body of films as arising not despite but because of the appearance of new media and the forms of exhibition they represent” (Klinger, 2022)

“As fixtures of the cinematic lexicon for decades, such texts [like Wizard of Oz] provide the opportunity to investigate a film's afterlife and the intricacies of textual longevity” (Klinger, 2022)

Barbara Klinger’s excellent 2022 book IMMORTAL FILMS is a great resource for thinking about this re-working of Wizard of Oz (as garish, foolish, or even “dangerous” as we might critique it for being”. Read the intro here: content.ucpress.edu/title/978052...

I’m very much looking forward to seeing folks soon at #SCMS25 in Chicago! Safe travels, all.

If you happen to be there on Thursday (tomorrow), perhaps consider attending our panel at 4:15pm - it’s bound to be a monstrously good time!
