Absolutely gibberish movie, but I'm still stunned Nickelodeon made it. "Bitch" and "prostitution" are said out loud, titties get grabbed and there's an extended bit about someone using Nair on their asshole.

TRICK 'R TREAT dir. Michael Dougherty (2007)

Honestly, it was pretty forgettable and generic as a horror, "Goosebumps"-like anthology outside of two really good scenes at the end. Also some insanely good puppet work in those two scenes as well.

THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA by Kyoto Animation (2006-09)

When the show remembers what it's about (a meta action series), it's actually kind of fun. Sucks that this is a minority of the time. Lots of big swings miss, and lots of gags are actually putrid.

This is why I’m counting this as the whole series instead of doing seasons one and two separately.) What I can respect about this series is the big swings it would occasionally take to try and do something different with storytelling. Even as the “Endless Eight” storyline was needlessly stretched out to the point of being redundant, it at least was a good experiment for KyoAni to try and adapt a strange manga arc. And when the show remembered what it was about, it was a fun exercise in meta storytelling. It should have happened way more often and shouldn’t have been relegated to mostly filler episodes, but remembering that Haruhi is almost god helped the series’s writers. What I cannot respect is both how boring this anime gets and how gross it’s willing to be to its characters. Including episode 00, the first three episodes are some of the most generic and yawn-inducing I’ve ever seen of any series of media. I would have dropped the series if it wasn’t marathoned in a group. And the way that the story treats Mikuru, especially at the end, is gross even by sex-crazed, teenage boy, anime standards. It surpasses just being a meta version of fan service. The whole thing is just frustrating and disappointing.

An insanely smart horror film, especially for a requel. Probably the most scared I've felt about the Shape ever.

This is a much more polished and confident version of "CLPPNG" from five years prior. As enjoyable as horrorcore can be. But I think a lot of the noise bookending the songs was a bit meaningless.

Cover for "There Existed an Addiction to Blood" by clipping. (2019) This is my first clipping. album that’s both not a concept album along with being good, making it a normal clipping. release. It’s much better executed and focused than “CLPPNG” was; the three of them seemingly figured out how to do the horrorcore schtick without it being completely corny or approaching Insane Clown Posse’s territory. I think my hangups here are partially in my skepticism towards the genre and partially towards a lot of unfocused noise. Making absolutely grating noise and music is part of what they’re aiming for, and they would get an A+ if this were a homework assignment on just that. But when most songs take a good narrative concept and drown it in noise at the end, then why bother with the first half of these songs at all? Even with mostly good music, those parts make this album a bit overrated for me. I will say that “The Show” is the only song in the world that almost made me faint. I get clipping. is a horrorcore trio that tries to hit every genre of horror. But did we really need an insanely detailed account of torture, nerve manipulation and amputation in a song that’s already disgusting in nature? VIE by Doja Cat (2025)

Quite literally the only reason my score is this high is because Doja is a generational talent at being multi-talented, and this album has more of that. It's sad she had to do it on mostly Jack Antonoff reject tracks.

Cover art for "Vie" by Doja Cat (2025) I’ll tell you right now that the only reason I think this album isn’t completely mediocre is just because Doja Cat is a generational talent that can elevate pretty much anything. Her delivery and personality are just as good as ever here. The fact that she can slide in between pop, rap and R&B multiple times throughout a song with no difficulty is her selling point, and you get more of that here. What I don’t like is her overreliance on Jack Antonoff’s nostalgic sound throughout the entire 49-minute runtime. Mainly for worse, the backings on this are the exact same types that have been dominating the top 40 charts since Jack met Taylor Swift. It wasn’t much new five years ago, and it’s even more stale now. There are some exceptions; being able to sample the “Knight Rider” theme is always nice, and the 80s sound works great on weirdo anthem “Stranger.” But the majority of this album is Doja trying to make magic on the Jack Antonoff scraps he likely cut five years ago. Favorite tracks: Stranger, AAAHH MEN! Least favorite track: Acts of Service

POKEMON: THE RISE OF DARKRAI dir. Kunihiko Yuyama (2007)

This is the Pokemon movie I've seen that's most like a movie. Mixed with a lot of good animation and a decent "misunderstood legendary" story, this is pretty good for a baby movie!

NO, I’M NOT A HUMAN by Trioskaz (2025)

Their character design bounces between hilarious and disturbing like a cuckoo clock, and the gameplay and criteria of figuring out who’s a visitor and who’s not is fun! Wish there were a bit more strangers, though.

It's through the protagonist's front door peephole, and everything is in a monochrome green palette. This game is very deserving to be Trioskaz’s breakout success. Their character design bounces between hilarious and disturbing like a cuckoo clock, and the gameplay and criteria of figuring out who’s a visitor and who’s not is challenging in the best way possible. The Pale One is terrifying for being so inspired by Judge Holden. Replayability is a bit limited with the current number of visitors and limited saves, but it shouldn’t deter anyone at all from playing this. I also really like the idea of making a COVID-19-inspired horror game without ever even bringing up disease. It hits most, if not all the topics of peak pandemic: changing criteria of being ill, connecting to people you can’t see, relying on delivery services, panic, conspiracy theories and the rapid change into a “new normal.” Usually, pandemic media makes me roll my eyes. Not this, though.

EGO DEATH AT A BACHELORETTE PARTY by Hayley Williams (2025)

I really wasn't expecting this to be so varied and so different from Paramore's sound. Minus a lagging second act, this is a really novel listen! "Parachute" is one of the best singles of 2025.

Cover art for "Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party" by Hayley Williams (2025) I think what impresses me most from this album is that Hayley is in her third decade of making music, but she absolutely refuses to act like an elder stateswoman of rock. This album is varied not just in having a bunch of non-Paramore-sounding music but also the topics she covers here. Her talking about her mental health, lost loves and insecurities and having it hit as hard as someone half her age doing it is a testament to her and Daniel James’ songwriting. I think the album being mostly varied (outside of the middle part) makes me really like this album a bit more than I usually would. For fucks’s sake, she interpolates “The Bad Touch” by Bloodhound Gang and makes it work! And “Parachute” is one of the best singles of the year. Shoutout to this album teaching me what mirtazapine is! Favorite tracks: Parachute, Mirtazapine Least favorite track: Love Me Different

LET GOD SORT EM OUT by Clipse (2025)

This album is what hip hop was made for. Great lyrics (yes, even the "yellow diamonds" one), incredible production and an almost mythical set of features. It deserves the praise it's getting.

Pusha T and Malice wanting to feel and embrace love through numerous outlets (family, God, life) but constantly being brought back to a much darker reality is something that’s defined the best hip hop since the genre had a name. It honestly would have bordered on being a dated album if not for the fantastic production Pharrell Williams brings to it. Somehow, he makes this sound like it came from a wooden box on the top shelf. I haven’t really heard something like this since “Watch the Throne” from 2011. And that’s before considering the features on this, which has no misses at all. Everyone is used perfectly. This album deserves all the love it gets, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it beats Kendrick for the Grammy. Also, I knew the “yellow diamonds look like pee pee” came from this but not exactly where. So hearing it hit in “Ace Trumpets” unexpectedly was absolutely hilarious. Favorite tracks: Chains & Whips, P.O.V. Least favorite track: E.B.I.T.D.A.
