Apparently, the current legal definition does not account for deep fakes and AI-generated images. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Neither the bra photo nor the fake met the Criminal Code definition of an intimate image, Puddington found, which is that the person must be nude, exposing his or her genital organs, anal region or breasts, or engaged in sexual activity. The case is the latest example of a grey area in Canadian law around so-called deepfake images, where Photoshop or AI tools can be used to cre- ate convincing nude images of almost anyone, often with little time or skill involved. In the fake photo, "it is not her nude body and, it is not her breasts - both of which are necessary to meet that definition," Puddington wrote in his October ruling (emphasis his.) "If this type of photo were meant to be captured by this section, Parliament would have specifi- cally done so ... This is not to say that a fake image does not cause harm and embarrassment, but that harm is not captured by the current provisions.' And the bra photo, in which there was scrib- bling over the woman's face, also failed to meet the definition because while it "shows a signifi- cant portion of her breasts," they are not exposed as she is wearing clothing, the judge found, while nevertheless stating that sharing a photo of someone in their underwear without their knowledge is "disgusting and disgraceful." "Nothing in these reasons should be read as say- ing that (the complainant) did not experience an embarrassing and humiliating event," Pudding- ton wrote. "The fact remains that the photos somehow exist, and (she) had to endure viewing and describing them in a courtroom full of peo- ple. Those photos may have also made their way into the public domain. She was emotional in court, and rightfully so. "While I am sympathetic to her, that sympathy cannot play any role in my judgment. I must apply the law dispassionately, and not try to shoehorn images into a definition simply because I find the photographs deplorable." The proliferation of digitally altered photos and Al-generated pornography appropriating some- one's likeness "is a clear growing problem and Parliament needs to act," said lawyer Gillian Hnati, who specializes in gender-based vio- lence cases and was not involved with the mat- ter before Puddington. "Yes, I do think Parliament needs to expand the definition" of intimate images, she said. "Femi- nist legal scholars have been sounding the alarm about this for some time."

From some angles, the wings of the butterfly dragonfly look golden or translucent. To reveal the full spectrum of colors, Takuya Ishiguro waited with a strobe on the shores of Kejonuma, a lake in Miyagi, Japan, until the insect fluttered by and its wings reflected his light and the sun perfectly. During an early morning shoot in a field outside Osaki, this hummingbird hawk moth flew past on the lookout for nectar. The leaf-cutter bee lives up to its name, using its sharp jaws to carve off neat pieces of leaves to build a nest. Ishiguro calls these insects “little engineers in nature.” While digger wasps do hunt grasshoppers and cicadas to feed their young, they primarily feast on flower nectar. In urban areas like Nikaho, Japan, that often comes from the Cayratia japonica vine

The idea of the global and the probiem of representing water lead the artists to look at painugs. While there are many representations of the sea and rivers, none adequately represented water as a living or symbolic entity. One painting stood out, however, even though it had little to do with water directly. It was Pieter Bruegel's 1562 painting The Fall of the Rebel Angels, which depicts the struggle between the Archangels and Lucifer, and, in Bruegel's time, referred to the Counter-reformation. What intrigued the artists was the liquid quality of the composition and figures. Characters representing the global breadth of water politics have replaced the Archangels in the Bruegel painting. In the middle, replacing Saint Michael, is an Andean indigenous woman, referencing to the successful fight against water privatization in Cochabamba, Bolivia. On the left side is a South Asian woman referencing to the struggles against the damming of the Narmada River in India. On the right is a Canadian environmentalist defending Canada's vast water resources. Activists of various nationalities and cultures have replaced the remaining angels. The abusers below cover the ground from oil companies to industrial polluters, water bottlers, dam builders, privateers, agribusiness types, the military, politicians and corporate thieves, and include dead fish, oil covered birds, drought, disease, and e-coli with the occasional unsuspecting victim floating among them. The project was assembled digitally. Each character was photographed separately, digitally manipulated and then assembled into the final image. Some of the characters were either constructed as a prop and photographed or were created out of photographic elements. Zoocasa released its findings as a response to five provinces, including Ontario, raising their minimum wages at the beginning of October. Locally, the renimum wage stands at $17.60, up 40 cents. Given that the average rent for a one-bedroom in Toronto is currently $2,295 a month, Ontario's minimum wage would need to spike by 150 per cent for residents earning that amount to be able to afford housing without using up more than a third of their income. The problem isn't isolated to downtown. To comfortably rent a one-bedroom in Oakville, for example, would-be tenants need to earn $42.81 an hour; in Etobicoke, $41.98 an hour; in North York, $41.62 an hour; and in Mississauga, $41.12 an hour.
