As he was funding Hamas and almost certainly had Israeli agents inside Hamas there is no way that he didn’t know about it.
As you suggest, it gave him the pretext for a devastating assault on Gaza. Could this be why he is so intent on wiping out all Hamas leaders? They knew too much.
