So, again, if you didn't get the halftime show/don't like the music/whatever - noted.

Then, the halftime show wasn't made for you/you grew out of it. It is for the ones who don't care about football (bonus if they do) and get some more butts watching the television.

Let others enjoy things. [6/6]

NFL got the message, following year booked Michael Jackson and after that continued to book major acts that would usually appeal to those that might not watch the game, but might stick around because of the halftime show. [5/6]

The experiment that year - a live broadcast of the variety show "In Living Color" just as halftime started. They even had a timer on the bottom in case anyone was going to switch back to the game.

They got about 20 million viewers and a majority of them not going back to the game. [4/6]

1992, however, something happened that changed it all.

Fox Networks were still pretty new, able to draw in the younger audiences but still trying to get their footing as a major network. Because of that, they were not afraid to experiment with things. [3/6]

Up until 1992, it was typically cheerleaders, school bands and some rock or jazz band on their last limbs.

Basically, bathroom break, or, if the game sucks, not even bother going back to it. [2/6]

Going to say V - that was my entry point, and tried playing the older ones and even VI, kept coming back to V. As someone said, it is on sale often on Steam - worth picking up.
