Death “I do not wish to be feared, I wish to be understood.” “I don’t think you’re that scary.” “You jumped when I first appeared.” “Well anyone would if they saw someone in robes just appear in their room. m” “Hm, I see. You do make a point.” “Right? Anyways, you said I only got another week or so right?” “Yes, that’s what is said on the collection scroll.” “So what made you come so early? You usually only go when they have a few minutes left, right?” “I don’t have any more collections until yours, so I decided to make an early visit.” “Is that so? Then I guess the doctors were pretty off, huh. They said I had another month or two.” “I have watched medicine and life spans advance. I will not be surprised if humans are able to stop aging and diseases in the next century.” “Damn, I’m not gonna get to live until then. I wouldn’t want to either, living forever sounds pretty boring. You can only do so much in your lifetime, that’s what makes it exciting y’know?” “I do not understand the human sentiment, but that does seem to be a logical approach towards living.” “Man, you’re so stiff. You can talk casually y’know. You sound like an old man with all of that talk.” “I am indeed old.” “Yeah, yeah, you’ve been alive for several millennia and have seen humans do stupid and smart stuff. I get it. Anyways, wanna play a game?” “What game do you suggest?” “A game I’ve been getting real good at. Here.” he smiled, handing the reaper a controller. “Oh, I do remember this game fondly. I accept your challenge.” “How about a wager, Reaper?” “Oh? A wager?” “If I win, let me live another two weeks. If you win, you get to do whatever you want.” “I do enjoy myself a good wager. Deal, first person to three wins.” “Game on, Reaper.” “Damn you’re good, I guess I won’t be getting that extra week.” he said, panting. “I do play this game quite a lot, the previous versions at least. Very well played young man, you did well.” “Thanks man, you can do whatever you want now, I’m fine with ending it on that one.” “Good night, Tatsu.” The reaper turned off the TV still displaying the character select screen and stood over the bed, watching Tatsu sleep soundly. After a while, it unrolled the scroll from its pocket and took out Tatsu’s name. “Hold on to this for me, I’ll be back to collect it.” A slip of paper appeared on the nightstand, held down by a golden coin with a scythe on the face. It walked to the doorway and turned around to look at the cramped hospital room. “It is rare to find someone who truly understands death and for that, I thank you. Farewell for now, you have my protection.”

As the group saw the arm start to break through the skies, he readied himself and started running towards where it would touch down. Unsheathing his two swords, he leaped onto the arm and sliced it as he scaled up towards the sky. “GOOOO DAISUKE! DON’T STOP!” he screamed, watching helplessly from the ground with the group. You know I won’t, Kentaro. Maybe the next person can finish what I can’t. he thought, chuckling to himself. The two women in uniforms glanced at each other with grim expressions before returning their gaze to Daisuke still scaling up the arm. “He won’t make it.” the second commander whispered. “No, he’s letting his emotions get to him. He wasn’t prepared.” the commander whispered back. Kentaro continued shouting at Daisuke as he kept scaling the arm, until he ran into the clouds. A flash of light flickered across the sky like a lightning bolt, followed by thunder. Kentaro’s face paled as the arm slowly pulled itself back into the sky. “No, no no no. Daisuke, you did it right? You finally slayed the god? You finally freed all of us?” “No he didn’t.” “So what? His sacrifice just didn’t matter? Is that what you’re saying Commander?” he shouted. “....Yes. He wasn’t able to fully control his emotions and lacked the strength to kill the god.” “SO YOU KNEW HE WAS STILL RECOVERING AND MADE HIM GO ANYWAYS? WHY DIDN’T YOU STOP HIM?” The commander averted her eyes, looking at the ground. “I’m, I’m sorry. I’ve failed once again, it seems.” “AGAIN? SO THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE LOST THEIR LIFE TO THIS STUPID GOD IN VAIN?” “THAT WAS MY BEST FRIEND. WE PROMISED THAT WE WOULD KILL THIS DAMNED GOD AND GROW OLD TOGETHER. SO WHY? WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP HIM? WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP HIM IF YOU KNEW?” “You have a month to prepare for the next Falling. Let’s return to camp, Commander.” the second commander interjected, grabbing the commander’s arm. “No. I’m done. I’m not doing this anymore. Go find someone else to do this. I’ve already lost my best friend, I’m not losing anything else to this stupid god. If I’m going to be forced to fight this war, I’m doing it on my own terms.” he said, throwing the keys from his belt at the second commander. “Ah, I apologize. If he’s leaving, I will be taking my leave as well. I wish you good luck. Farewell.” the blonde warrior said, bowing. Kentaro got on his horse and rode it for a few hours until he arrived at the house, with a woman standing outside. She looked at him with hopeful eyes, but as he got off the horse, he looked dejectedly at the ground and shook his head. “I’m sorry, I failed. He didn’t make it.” he said as a single teardrop fell from his eye and she continued crying into his arms. The blonde warrior continued walking along the ruined train tracks, no longer used due to the war. I wonder what Master would’ve said about this. She pulled out a ration from her leather bag and continued walking as she ate. Oh, there it is. She approached a familiar tunnel, touching the drawing of a symbol that matched her chestplate’s emblem. The wall began to turn, creating a doorway with a dim light shining through. She ducked under the arch and the door turned shut behind her. “Master, I have returned.” she called out, grabbing the lantern that sat on the counter. As she descended the spiral staircase, her steps echoed with her armor. “Master, I have finally returned. Here are some offerings.” she said, placings the plants and coins from her bag onto the tombstone. She took off her armor and hung them on the stand next to the one holding a worn, but well maintained katana. After kneeling in front of the tombstone for a prayer, she poured a drink from her flask into two cups. “I have many tales from my adventures to share with you.” she smiled, placing the worn wooden cup on the tombstone. She raised her cup to the tombstone with a toast, “Cheers, Master.” and poured the wooden cup onto the tombstone. “I’ve failed again. I knew he wasn’t ready, yet I sent him to die anyways. I’ve lost so many lives to this god, so what’s the point in sending more people to go when I know I can kill it? The simulations are never wrong.” “You can’t Commander, the people need you. They need your direction, they’ll be lost without you.” “There’s no need for direction when the war is over. There won’t be any more Fallings. Everyone can begin to rebuild this broken world, and I can join the people I’ve sacrificed in vain.” “They’ll also have you, Kanna. I’m sure you’ll be able to rebuild this world better than it was before. I’ve only ever been good for war tactics and my power anyways.” “B-But Commander! I... I don’t know what I’m supposed to do if I lose you. What am I supposed to do when I’m lost?” “Kanna, my child, you’ve been by my side for your entire life. I’m sure you’ll know how, but if you ever do feel lost, you can talk to me through these. They stay with me even after I die.” she said, ringing a pair of small bells. “I-I see.” she said, looking down and gripping the bells at her belt. “I’ll do my best, Commander.” “Good, now off you go. I’ll be the last person this god takes away from this world, so you can start rebuilding the city first, ok?” “Com- Yoshiko-sama, thank you for your service and all that you’ve done.” she said, bowing deeply. “And thank you for always being here, Kanna. I love you my child, and I’ll miss you. The next Falling is about to start, but I’m sure you know this. I’m off now.” she waved with a smile. “Farewell, mother.” she waved back, crying. “Farewell, my sweet child Kanna.” An arm pierced through the clouds, signaling the start of another Falling and the Commander blinked away so fast that only her silhouette was occasionally left behind. She scaled the arm in mere seconds and disappeared into the clouds. After a few seconds, the arm vaporized into mist and the clouds were blown away, followed by sunny showers. Extra/Epilogue “She... she did it. It’s over, just like that.” Kanna said, falling to her knees. “Can you feel it? The Heavens have forgiven. It seems the Commander has succeeded, Master. ” she said, sipping on the drink. “She’s done it.” He looked at the clear skies raining, still holding onto his swords. “So why did we have to sacrifice so many people if she could’ve done that? Why couldn’t we do that in the first place?” “If only I could go back to stop so many people from dying in vain...”
