Just one day after Amazon announced layoffs for 14,000 of its employees, Alphabet made it clear that mandatory layoffs are not inevitable in the tech industry.

The Alphabet Workers Union has issued a statement in response to Amazon’s announcement that it will lay off 14,000 corporate workers: “Now is the time for us to stand together collectively, so we have power and a real voice in our industry.”

We're fighting for job security for ALL of us – including our coworkers on H-1B visas. Last month, AWU added a new demand to our Googlers For Job Security campaign: severance as leave, so that workers on visas have extra time on the payroll to find a new job & maintain their legal status in the US.

But the fight is far from over. While Tuesday’s announcement did fulfill one of our demands, it still included a top-down RTO mandate for many remote Googlers. We, the workers who drive Google’s profitability, deserve a real say over our working conditions.
