Real, both are possible and good for sure, and I'm always excited to see something I've never seen before! I just also have a tendency to be like "gaah nothing I make has any value, it's just fantasy with stuff stolen from anime!" but like, I like that stuff too, and should have fun in the process!

And when you've got this big telegraphed attack, apart from it fitting the aesthetic of a super powerful attack, you can sorta just design whatever you want from here. Damage numbers that would otherwise be unfair, mechanics that rely on what actions players take or where, bargains and trades, etc.

When I first started playing, I think I remember someone getting hit with like, dragon fire or something and asking "well, can I duck under the table?" which is a Very Cool visual, but a little too late when you're making dex saves. But I like leaning into that right?? Sword clashes and bullet time!

The last few D&D games I ever ran I just straight-up stole FFXIV markers and replaced Lair Actions and things with them, and that was lots of fun. I still sometimes chuck them in other games because it's a lot more fun seeing people Lock In to figure out instead of just taking a random hit.
