You can do the typewriter style:
"I have the ALT code for them -- wait for it -- memorized."
Still unquestionably meant to be a dash, but no longer do you need to be anal about the special Unicode character. 🙂

Unless you have some weird TV (*cough* LG), where turning the sharpness below 50 means adding a blurring filter! It looks like a TV smeared in vaseline on 0. It's just dreadful.
