What makes someone a professional in this context? I've been running events for 20 years now. Do I count?

Like outsourcing stuff like main stage? sure.

Outsourcing reg, dealers/vendors management - much much harder, the way trade shows do reg or vendors wouldn't meet community expectations.

Tuba and Clarinet, I was much better at Tuba - even though I played it for a much shorter period of time. Wrong embouchure for woodwind I reckon. 12 years of band, and I never could sight read music, I had to mark up my fingering.

Agreed! - I saw all the sports I needed to from the grandstands holding an instrument. But I'm not gonna slide into a conversation and yuck others yums.

Quit yucking other peoples yum - be kind and joyful. Like no one is being hurt because someone likes sports, I'm about as athletic as a rock, and have all of the coordination of a 3 year old with tied together shoes, sports was clearly not for me, but if it brings joys to others, let them enjoy.

Time cannot be stopped, it chugs on - and this too shall pass - whatever *this* happens to be, relish today for what it is, a gift, and spend less time on whatever topic of the day excites others - it'll all be forgotten anyhow soon enough. 6/6

As the saying goes "the graveyards are filled with indispensable men" - only perhaps the 1% of 1% of highly accomplished people will be remembered, will be remembered for their accomplishments. The rest? virtually forgotten within two generations of their death. 4/?

Now, the point of this thread isn't to speak about his ever shining brilliance as an author, he was good, and wrote social commentaries of his age - the point is that someone at the commanding heights of his profession is basically an unknown today. 3/?

Who is Booth Tarkington, you might ask?

100 years ago, the best selling author in America, as widely read - and as well thought of as Twain. A midwestern regionalist, who - having read him, is a good or very good author.

I remember this when you got it, and it does indeed look so much richer in person than it does online.
