Hawaiian Typhoon brand popcorn package, flavor is sour cream/chives/Nori. Made in Hawaii, microwavable, it’s a very colorful package with pink and yellows swirled with flying flowers and palm tree trees. So Ono! A big yellow bowl of popcorn with butter, sour cream and chive flavoring, and small strips of nori (seaweed). Yum/ono!

My Dad was born in 1929. He’s going to be 96. Their story is in the alt text of the photo.

Here he is in Trieste, Italy with my Mom and her parents.

My Nonni were antifascists, fighting Hitler. Dad is also in his antifascist uniform.

My dad was stationed in Trieste Italy after WWII two help protect the free territory of Trieste from attack while the world decided if Trieste should be Italian or Yugoslav. The decision in the 1950s was to return it to Italy, but by then my father and mother had already married and returned to America.

The Christmas tree got put away. I can’t pretend anymore since today was Inauguration Day.

So the living room is back to normal, ready for friends to come visit and talk, read books, enjoy a fire, play games, eat snacks, & survive the next 4 years while recharging each day. #resist #rebelalliance
A cozy chair and lamp, a large square coffee table, and therapy dough, pen case, stationery folder, candle, book “Inner Simplicity,” and oddly enough a salt shaker and Allertec nasal spray. I suddenly remember needing both the other day and apparently I didn’t put them away. Living room with two cottagey couches in white, blue, and green stripe, two old-fashioned chairs with curved legs and wood edging, an antique marble topped, coffee table, a side table, Tiffany style lamp, but definitely not Tiffany because who can afford that, and a record player over in the corner. Curtains in the background, the light is on, and throw rugs on the hardwood floorthe way it’s organized, you could have six people, or three couples, easily sit and visit in this spot. The pretty fireplace screen ready to be moved if we have a fire. It is stained glass, in three pieces, a large curved top Center piece with filagree in white and a large orange tulip or rose in the center, with lots of curly cues and green and blue. The two side pieces are smaller versions of this with even more detailed filigree knots in white. On the left is a little tin navy goat with the blue N logo for the navy, and on the right is an antique set of mini fireplace tools, big enough for a fireplace insert. A roaring fire in the fireplace and sadly, it is a Duraflame log because that’s all we have. Also, some old Kleenexes and papers in there because I was burning those as well. Lol. But it is cheerful.

I love that they had the translations, these poems were so sad or frustrated. I had my students write poems as though they were stuck at Angel Island, and it was amazing what they came up with! Some of them even translated their poems into Chinese using Google translate. It was awesome.

To exert influence, one can use a square-holed elder brother.* There are children who disturbed the ears, But there are no incoherent sounds that cause fatigue. I gaze to the south at the hospital, And look to the west at the army camp. That author says, “What happiness is there in this?” * “a square-holed elder brother” refers to money. The ancient Chinese coins had a square hole in the middle.

Have you been? Oh my gosh, it is so amazing. I went on a Thursday session during NCSS 2017. It was AWESOME.
One of the tables at which the Chinese immigrants being held at Angel Island would sit and read or write or have snack, snacks, play, games, etc. Some of the Chinese poetry written on the walls of the angel Island immigration station in San Francisco Bay, these have been painted over One of the offices where Chinese immigrants would be interrogated for days, weeks, months, and in one case two whole years before being deported, if it all possible. This was done to adhere to the Chinese exclusion act, which prohibited Chinese immigration to the United States. A list of questions asked of attorneys, which is long and detailed, and might include such questions as, where were you born, when were you born, who are your parents, when were they born, where were they born, do you live at home with them, what is that address. Have you ever lived at a different address? How many windows are in your house? Where is your parents room in relation to your room, how many windows are in your room, where are those windows located, do you have chickens, how many chickens do you have, where does your grandmother live, how far is it to your grandmother’s house, who are her neighbors, on which side of her house does each neighbor live, how many chickens does your grandmother have, how many windows are in your grandmother‘s house, or her feet natural or bound, or your mother‘s feet, natural or bound, and on and on and on. The attempt was to try and catch out a Chinese immigrant in a lie, because they would only be allowed in if they were related to a US citizen, a son or daughter or wife, who is already in the United States. That person, who may or may not actually be a relative, had to match their answers to yours or you, as an immigrant would be sent back. People would sell papers of false relatives, along with a information book, to people in China, who wanted to come to the United States. You had to have quite a bit of money, you had to give up your real name for the rest of your life, and you had to memorize that information. Frequently they would throw the books overboard before they reached angel Island because you wouldn’t want to be caught with that. There are still people in San Francisco, who were paper, sons, or daughters, and families who never knew that their grandparents or great grandparents names were not what they thought they were.

Onolicious kine grinds at da L&L BBQ in Millbrae CA, near SFO international airport. I chose Kalua pig with cabbage, two scoop rice, and one scoop Mac salad. Could get chicken Katsu, chicken cutlet with gravy, Hawaiian bowls, saimin, seafood plates, loco moco, plate lunch, platters… All kine good grinds. Poster saying “take your taste buds to Hawaii“ and featuring musubi with barbecue chicken, chicken Katsu, or spam. A metal container for straw wrappers, with a surfboard shaped sticker saying “L & L Hawaii, since 1952”, and below it is a Mandela Neko waving a Shaka and wearing sunglasses. Da Neko wen say “Brah,it’s Katsu, not Catsu” A daily specials board listing Haupia for $2.50, chicken lumpia for $6.25, Manapua for $3.25, and a family value pack for $68.99, featuring four pieces barbecue chicken, or four pieces barbecue beef, or four pieces chicken Katsu, along with eight scoops rice and four scoops Mac salad. Basically it’s plate lunch for four.

Boston charcuterie tray with various meats, cheeses, baked sweet potato with something creamy on top, walnuts and fruit. Maine lobster rolls from the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport Maine, with the bridge and Kennebunkport town behind it. Just your basic caprese Sammich at Limoncello deli in San Francisco. Layered fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, balsamic sauce layered in a an inverted pattern as seen from the cut side of the sandwich An average breakfast buffet on Oahu. The fruit alone is fabulous. Fresh pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, spam and eggs, baked goods, etc..

So happy I got my 2025 Hawaiʻi calendar from Ed Taguba! I was in a bit of a panic because I couldn’t find it, and my husband didn’t remember it coming in, but it turns out he put it someplace weird. It’s gorgeous, @koloheboy.bsky.social!!

Crazy intense weather in Eureka knocked out power to dad’s house. It’s 58 degrees and he doesn’t want to leave the house. He’s almost 96! We are going over and I’m gonna threaten to cry if he doesn’t come with us (I’m the baby of the family—at 58!). Wish me luck. He needs to be warm!!
Nighttime at Dad’s house and no lights are on at all. Just can see cars in the flash. Weather map showing yellow for intense rains in our area My super cute almost 96-year-old dad grinning, looking very much like he might only be 70. Honestly, he seems to be going from gray back to dark hair. I don’t get it. It’s almost like that movie where the guy agents in reverse.

The MyShake App alert went off a second or two before the #earthquake —and my ring camera caught it. That was wild!

I had only ever heard that alert once before, so at first, I didn’t know what it meant. Amazing we have this technology.

The tsunami alert has been canceled, however, my husband teaches in Fortuna, and this is the text he sent me. Haven’t heard verification of water on Highway 101 in Fortuna area, but that is what they are hearing at the school as some students cannot leave. #Earthquake #Eureka #fortuna #BreakingNews.
This is a Humboldt alert, tsunami warning canceled. The tsunami warning has been lifted. Resident should be prepared for aftershocks Text from I may not be getting home for a while 101 is flooded meaning Highway 101. I respond, with car or water? He responds, water, I am still at school. Reminder to everybody in Earthquake country: that 7.0 was pretty intense, so make sure you check your gas meter and your water meter to make sure the dials aren’t spinning. If they are, you’ve got a leak and you’ve got to shut it off.
