On this day: 24 Feb 1716 execution for treason of 3rd Earl of Derwentwater. His estates were forfeited to the Crown, then given to Greenwich Hospital, which sold Derwentwater House to the Percy family. They replaced it by the Commissioner's House which became the Duchess’s School in 1888.

On this day 13 Feb 1871: George Davison loses control of a horse and phaeton on Clayport Bank. Clayport Low Pant (a.k.a. Tower Lane Pant) is struck, and the cap falls off killing four-year-old Mary Anne Murphy. A replacement pant (pictured) was destroyed in 1948 by a runaway bus whose brakes failed.
