Efforts to conserve our heritage are sometimes accused of just throwing a spanner into the works. So on May 14th Alnwick Civic Society has arranged a discussion to explore how the planning system can best protect our heritage. All are welcome. St James Church. Doors open 7:00 for 7:30 start.

7 March 1849 death of William Thomas Edward Smith, architect of Mechanics Institute at age of 59. "As a professional he has left few specimens in the town of his abilities as an architect but there is little doubt that he possessed all the necessar qualities for such an undertaking".

On this day: 24 Feb 1716 execution for treason of 3rd Earl of Derwentwater. His estates were forfeited to the Crown, then given to Greenwich Hospital, which sold Derwentwater House to the Percy family. They replaced it by the Commissioner's House which became the Duchess’s School in 1888.
